I have had the same problem the last couple of times I went out. I think it is just dirty fluid. I am going to get it flushed for the fear that I may have gotten water in there and thined out the fluid.

Don't overwork the transmission. Use 4-Low :D

I did the same thing ... kept the vehicle in 4-High ... oops  and the light came on for about five minutes. You might want to check whether that left any code, though. Use the ignition on-off-on-off-on thing to read the diagnostics code.

I had mine in 4-low all day at Paragon and towards the end of the day it decided to come on.

I also take it out of drive and put it in 1st if I'm in 4-low. No shifting involved that way.

This is a very common problem especially at high altitudes.

Yep, all of you with the 42 rle at least the guys I have gone up old stage down here in the springs, all of their tranny lights come on once we got to a certain place. Mine did not. I have to agree with Joel that it may be an altitude thing.

As far as the fear of water, trust me if you even had a tablespoon of water in the tranny, you would deffinetly know it... Trust me!

Yes I know I had much much more in mine...

If you are worried about water, look at the dipstick, it will look like strawberry milkshake, and you will have a lot of frothy/foamy bubbles on the stick.

'02 KJs and '03 KJs built in '02 have the 45RFE. '03 KJs built in '03, '04 KJ and '05 KJs with the 3.7L have the 42RLE. '05 KJs with the CRD have the 5-45RFE.

Mine sometimes comes on when off-road as well. The owner's manual says to put the tranny in neutral and let the engine sit at idle until it goes off so I just started putting it in neutral everytime I'm stopped now instead of leaving it in gear and holding the brake down. I haven't seen it light up once since I've started doing this.

I've never had mine come on yet, when a number of others have. I shift mine into 4-low almost right away and try to use the lowest gear I can.

I have tried the trick with putting it in neutral when stopped and it still came on. On the last ride I just went to an area where i could use 2wd and get a little speed to help with air flow and it went right off. I think the sensor is a little sensitive when it comes to heat. I have also been at high alt. when it has happend so that part of the theroy my be right.

As far as the high altitude part, is "high altitude" the mountains of WV or CO?

how does the altitude effect the temp of the tranny, i understand liquid boils at a lower temp b/c its under lower pressure but that wouldnt effect tranny fluid would it?

You have less power at altitude and therefore must rev the engine higher to climb hills and obsticles. The more you rev with the torque converter slipping, the more heat it generates.

ohh, ok i get it, so less pressure makes the engine work more for the air.
