2005 Jeep Liberty LTD/CRD

I am attempting to install a 7-way trailer light adapter on a nifty little CRD I just bought - now #2 in my stable. The harness on the 7-way plug has a short (12" or so) pigtail with connector that is supposed to "plug in" to the factory pre-wiring. Unfortunately (1) a previous owner has installed a Flat-4 connector, and it's pretty much a hatchet job, terminating on the left side - can't see the actual connection. (2) The plug-in on the body is not visible. There are some bundled wires that go into a sheet metal tube about 4" square, centered under the bumper. I can't pull these wires out, and - here's my dillema: It appears that to find out where these wires go (if they're even the right ones) and to get a look inside that tube - I have to completely remove the rear bumper.

OK, I'll do that if I have to, BUT does anyone know the trick way to get to this plug? I hate pulling something completely apart, only to find out that if I had known, I'd only have to take it 10% down to get to what I wanted.

Wiring should be coming down out of the right side. Ones I've been involved with you remove the inside panel and connect the wires, running them down through a hole in the body to the receiver. Its hard to tell what the PO did or how he connected them
