Now that I'm nearing 50,000 miles on the KJ, I need to change the front and rear diff fluid. I probably should have changed it 20,000 miles ago, but...........

Anyway, I went to the Amsoil website to see what they recommended. I was surprised to see the various types and recommendations for the KJ. Anyway, I already have the Severe Gear 75W-90 for the front diff. I use the Severe Gear 75W-90 in the Ram and it holds up very well. I'm not sure what to do in the rear. I don't have a limited slip, so I guess that I need to order the Severe Gear 75W-140. Anyone else running Amsoil?

Differential, Front......GL-5
All TEMPS......80W-90
SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVGQT)
75W-90 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube (FGRQT)
SEVERE GEAR 75W-110 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVTQT)
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (AGLQT)

Differential, Rear 198 RBI Model 35......GL-5
All TEMPS......75W-140 [3]
SEVERE GEAR 75W-140 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVOQT)
80W-140 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube (FGO05)

Limited Slip Differential, Rear 8.25 RG......GL-5*
All TEMPS......75W-90 [4] [5]
SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVGQT)
75W-90 Synthetic Long Life Gear Lube (FGRQT)
SEVERE GEAR 75W-110 Synthetic EP Lubricant (SVTQT)
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (AGLQT)

For less then the price of 2qts of that stuff just use the good stuff instead.

Normal driving(no offroad or towing) just use good old dino 80w-90.

Towing--80w-90 front and 85w-140 rear.

Offroading--85w-140 front and rear.

The cheapest stuff will do just fine and will far better protect then any of the high priced synthetics.

Troy, you've always hated Amsoil, haven't you?

As for capacities, this is what I found:

Front differential (1.31 quarts, or 2.60 pints)
Rear differential (2.19 quarts, or 4.40 pints)

Does that sound right?

I've been running the 75-110 front and rear for about 2 years now. No issues with it. Can't say it's any worse or better than any other fluid though.

The discussion we had earlier centered on Currie Axles
they make high performance differentials for Jeeps and racing applications.

they will not warranty an axle that uses synthetic oil.
they have a solid warranty on their axles if you use regular dino oils.

I called their tech department
they really didn't know what it was about synthetics that caused problems - but they had a much higher failure rate - so they said no more, and now - dino oils only.

I have to agree with tjkj,
stick with the proven 85w-140 dyno, it is impossible to beat!
I have had to rebuild several rear ends for friends that were running the synthetic stuff that had either bearing failures or wiped the ring and pinion gears or both....
I would be very careful about what oil I used in a differential....

The Amsoil Severe Gear meets and exceeds OE specifications. Problems occur if the lubricant doesn't meet OE specifications. The Severe Gear has had good UOA results on the Ram 2500 and 3500 diffs, so I'm going to use it on the Liberty. My new diff cover has a magnetic drain plug and dip stick, so this will make future lube changes easier.

Problem with "meets OE specification" is it's for mpg's only not longevity.
