Hi Everyone!

I bought a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD about 6 months ago from the second owner. It is a clean western car with 150k miles on it. Timing belt done about 20k ago. It has been a great car so far. Recently started making an irregular rattle/chatter from the front of the motor when starting it cold. I took it to a diesel shop and they thought it was something internal and told me the motor would need replaced. I am not going to go that route and was looking for some technical advice if anyone has some to offer.

In the video you can hear the faint ticking. Not as elevated as it can be sometimes.

Any advice is appreciated!!!

Thank you.

Sounds like a bearing on the way out on one of your pulleys.

Find a more competent shop for a second opinion

Try removing the serpentine belt, start the engine, and see if the noise goes away. If it does, most likely a pulley problem or the alternator pulley is going bad.
Inspect the alternator pulley by removing the plastic cap on the end of the pulley and look for red rust dust.
While you have the serpentine belt removed from the engine, hand spin and feel for any excess play or roughness in all of the pulleys bearings including the idler pulleys, viscous heater pulley, AC pulley, mechanical fan pulley (spin fan by hand), etc...

If the noise continues with the serpentine belt removed, most likely the harmonic balancer has gone bad and rattling.
Only option if bad is to find a good used one as new ones are no longer available anymore or send your balancer to Damper Doctor and let them rebuild it.

The diesel shop had pulled the serpentine belt to isolate the noise and it was still present. I guess I will try for the damper doctor harmonic balancer rebuild if that seems like the next culprit. Thanks for all of the help so far! Much appreciated!
