God bless those souls of the lost and affected!!

ALAN JACKSON LYRICS

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)"

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below

Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

The greatest is love
The greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September

On 9/11/05 I was on the American Jeepster Club site often. We lost a member, Brian Sweeney, who was on one of the planes. Just one of the many tragic stories, but the only one that I have a personal connection to.

"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned, forgive, and ye shall be forgiven." Holy Moses of Nazareth Luke 6:37

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, 'Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you'." - Holy Moses of Nazareth, Matthew 5:38-44

Now, could someone please remind me (I'm getting a bit forgetful in my old age) who would Jesus bomb?

I don't want to start a religious argument, but since you've already used religion to start a political one, I'll say that I believe the Jesus that drove the money changers out of the temple in Jerusalem would also condone the self defense of a free nation.

That being said, Redneck Ron's post (and Alan Jackson's lyrics) was an expression of faith, hope, love, and compassion, not judgment. Many thousands of Americans suffered 4 years ago, as many thousands are today. Thanks, Ron, for the reminder.

Going back to remembering those lost, God Bless all who were affected on that horrible, horrible day.

I'll never forget what I was doing that day. Just finished shaving and brushing my teeth, about to head out the door to work and still had the morning news on and they broke in with it. I sat there watching the 1st tower hit on fire, and the panic. Then I saw the second plane hit, live on TV....I couldn't believe it. I jumped in the jeep, raced down to work (none of them had an idea what was happening) and since I work right next to the huge Oil Farm that could easily become a terrorist target if they so fancy, my boss deicded to close the office that day and sent us all home. Once I got home I don't think i stopped watching the news at all that day. I'll never forget it as long as I live.

Seth, you cut the lines short to make it look bad. Start from the beginning of that section of the song. What you have done is what most media loves to do to create controversy.

Please leave religion (particularly Christianity) out of this. Americans and people from many other countries died 4 yrs ago and they came from many other religions and non-religions.

I was in Okinawa, Japan, just settling down for a short nights sleep in my barracks rack and one of the other Sergeants who was up late watching the news ran down our hall pounding on all the doors shouting something about a plane hitting the WTC Towers.. surely, I thought to myself, this was some sort of freak accident...

Believe what you want as most do but, if Jesus is God, then that would be his perogative. What Jesus told the rest of us is pretty straight forward and I have never seen how his explicit directive to NOT retaliate against someone who has wronged you could be interpreted any other way than that.

Btw, I didn't start anything. Redneck Ron started the post with the word "God" and went on to include lyrics that spoke of talking to god, looking up to heaven, reading the bible, and proclaiming to not see any difference between Iraq and Iran. (Neither of which, remember, had a single thing to do with the horrible crimes that took place four years ago.)

Hopefully this thread will be quickly shut down and locked up for being non-Jeep like the New Orleans thread was.

Again, I didn't start in with the Christianity; the opening post of the thread brought the subject of Christianity onto the table. Is there another religion that has its adherents claiming to "know Jesus and..talk to God"?

Leave religion out of it? Fine, then leave religion out of it!

He posted lyrics to a song. Ron did not write the lyrics. It is a song, and while it could be looked at negatively by some, those lyrics are in the song.

The word "God" is a term used by most religions and is generic in meaning so it can be accepted by those that have a religion. Not by those that do not have a religion.

Step away from all of this and just peacefully celebrate life for those that can no longer celebrate it.

I had just finished getting dressed and decided to turn on Fox News for a few minutes before going in to work. The first plane had hit. It wasn't clear yet what was happening, but it didn't feel like a small thing like the little Cessna that had crashed into a skyscraper a few weeks before.

I went up to brush my teeth and kiss my wife goodbye, and said that a plane had crashed into one of the towers, having no idea what a terrible day it would turn out to be. Went to the office and watched live television showing the second airliner crashing into the other tower. Needless to say, no work got done that day. My entire company was glued to the TV and radio.

I'll never forget the terror on the faces of the people running through the streets, being chased by walls of dust and debris. Or the people jumping from over 100 stories above the street, to escape the fierce heat.

The next year, my wife and 2 sons helped place 3,000 American flags in a community tribute in front of City Hall. The flags were offered for sale to benefit the local Firefighters charity, and I bought a couple, so that I would have opportunities to talk to my kids about what happened.

Notice the flags of other nations. Not only the "evil American empire" was affected.

The writer of the lyrics was referring to his own lack of knowledge about geopolitics, he wasn't making a racist statement or implying that Iran or Iraq were responsible for 9/11. You jumped to that prejudiced conclusion on your own.

To paraphrase (since you lack reading comprehension), Jackson is saying that he doesn't know much about the Middle East, but he has been taught since he was young to have compassion and charity for others who are suffering, like the victims of the 9/11 attacks. It's that simple. No judgment. No condemnation of anyone. Just a simple expression of sympathy and a sincere desire to help fellow Americans.

That's what this topic is about. And it's highly appropriate, given the date, and the suffering that our fellow Americans are feeling as a result of Katrina. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindi, Atheists, Agnostics, and other Americans are coming together to help now as we did then. There's no need for political rhetoric or thinly-veiled Bush bashing.

No, I will not. And don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. Anyone with half a brain can read the lyrics and get that the narrator is specifically Christian. There's not a line asking if anyone consulted the Talmud or the Koran or the Bhaghadvad-Gita. And the author doesn't refer to a generic deity but refers to Jesus and the Bible.

Troyster - that's really wonderful that the decision was made to include the flags of other nations who lost people that day. I'm very aware of the fact that many who died that day were from other countries but I've never seen the flags of their native lands represented in concert like that. That is really cool.

Easy there amigo. Let's not devolve into personal attacks.

I don't read the lyrics that way but I can see that it could be read the way you describe...touche. As for Bush-bashing: I didn't think I had offered any veil at all

I wonder if Jackson has compassion for the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed by US forces as a response to 9/11.

You are saying we are killing/killed Iraqi civilians on purpose like the terrorists did to our people? You are MEDIA!

I can't think of any worse insult, than to call you that....or perhaps you are Michael Moore invading our forum.

Yeah, someone might accidentally think for themselves and offer critical analysis from their point of view instead of hurling derogatory epithets as an emotional response to their being disagreed with.

I was in school that day and didnt find out about it until about 3 in the afternoon. As soon as I got home, I was watching tv until I went to bed. May the those poor souls rest in peace knowing that we are avenging their death.
