When I apply the brakes, my steering wheel shakes left and right (on its turning axis) about 1/2 inch, just rotating back and forth. Is this an alignment issue? Brakes? What is wrong? Its pretty unnerving and people think my Jeep is junk....

get the rotors machined, and get alignment done if it follows by pulling to a side.
Most likely rotors are bad.

Warped rotor or rotors
This can happen if the breaks go from very hot ,going down a long steep grade, then getting very cold ,hitting water at bottom of grade

I have seen it on a few of my past rides and my work truck
some time they can machine them flat some times not

How ever it can also be bad steering components
or bad ball joints or..............

I would start with the rotors

don't cut the rotors REPLACE them I just did my full brake job for the same reason all better now

since we are on the topic i have the same problem which isn't to bad YET. I have 63,000 kms on my kj and their going bad already!!!?? Anyway the pads look like they might only be 1/3 rd worn. What is the price for new rotors and pads and where is the best place to get them?dealership??? What brand has anyone put on? usually you are better off getting new rotors rather than having them "turned"(machined) for the price difference, and put new pads on if you are replacing the rotors!!!!! :wink:

Yup, as per the post above. Save money change to rotors right away. Do not waste time on machining. It is a waste.

I have mine done at R & S Strauss. They lifetime guarantee the pads and they usually turn my rotors included in the price of the brake job. If I need rotors after they are turned (happened once) then they tell me and I replace the rotors. Last time they did that, they included the labor since they had the rotors off anyway. I've had them do several services for me and been actually impressed.

DON'T GO TO THE DEALER!!!

NO.. i wont take the kj anywhere but my backyard to do a brake job, it's very straight forward. I was just wondering what kind of prices i would be looking at to do the rotors and pads? And what brand of brakes has anyone used that are good or dont reccommmend! I usually go to canadian tire and pick up brakes, or NAPA auto parts.

My rotors warped alittle around 15k and I had them machined down just a tad. The shaking wasnt very bad at all though, just enough to know they were warped. Im at 26k now and Ive not had any problems with warping again. Ive really been wanting to get the power slot rotors.. Mostly for looks. :twisted:


I would get ceramic pads since thats what comes on it. Ive heard that Napa rotors are good. Not to sure what the best ceramic pads are though..

Thanks for the replies. How difficult is it to change out the rotors yourself? Is this something that should be left up to the pros? In case there is something wrong with the pads, etc?

not hard at all to change the rotors just pull the brake caliper off should be 2 bolts ( on back of it) & wiggle the rotor off if it's realy rusted just wack the back of it with a hammer should come right off

Rotors are fairly cheap. IT is all labor that makes the job expensive.
How about slotted or drilled rotors, anyone running them? Once I drive through puddle, it take a long while to get the water out, and brakes almost don't work for some short distance (almost rear ended another car recently)

Yeah, you wont need an alignment, im pretty sure about that. None of the steering or camber settings have changed
