has anyone had this light come on? when i had my engine replaced, and got it back, the light was on. the dealer said it wasnt their fault, even though it wasnt on when i took it in. they said its an internal airbag controller fault, they ran the code. 500 bucks to fix it. i said forget it im not going to pay that.

mine has been on for a while. i figured it was on some sort of a timer so that the dealer could check it out and make sure everything was ok. i dont know that that is true and probably isnt but i wouldnt spend 500 bucks to have it turned off either. sorry i couldnt help more but i figured i would let u know ur not the only one :D

So what part are they saying is wrong?

If replacing the engine they could have damaged one of the 2 SRS sensors(one on each side of the raditor) or possibly the wiring. If the wiring was nicked and shorting out they are at fault, might want to check the wiring to those two sensors. Also if they unhooked the steering shaft from the rack they could have messed up the clockspring, agian there mess to fix.Now if it is in the SRS control modual then they probally had no fault in it.

Just to let you know if you have the airbag discount from your insurance company and you get in a wreck where the airbags should have gone off but since a fault excisted preventing them from going off they may/MAYNOT be liable to pay you since you didn't keep the airbags in working condition(not saying you should spend the money though).

agreed on the above, also.......does your cruise control work? that would be indicative of a clockspring failure, but not always.

the clock spring is the spool of tape/ribbon that winds/unwinds a length of wire "tape" as you turn the steering wheel left/right, it allows electrical connections through the rotary motion of the steering wheel.

they should be able to pull a code and tell you what is causing the fault....i nicked a wire in the dash (unknowingly) and the airbag light started coming on. took it to the dealer and couldn't find anything wrong but pulled a code that said the control circuit for the pass side #1 squib was faulty. i'd be willing to bet they nicked a wire for one of the sensors as someone else suggested.

GET THAT CODE!! 8)

I think there may be a fuse for the airbag that can be pulled if you are afraid it will fire off. Other than that, black plastic electrical tape makes a nice little cover to block the light from being seen.

There is a fuse and PLEASE pull it before working on any part of the SRS system(ie disconecting plugs, removing steering wheel) or the airbag may fire.

Even though setting airbags are fun to setoff it attracts the local law enforcement also, real fast when launching a plastic garbage can 75ft in the air with them,I know.

You can get away with alot of stuff in Kentucky tjkj. Ive never had problems shooting off tater guns in the wee hours of the night.. Or shooting buckets up in the air(out of sight) with some crazy fire works we found at the local flee market.

i noticed that when i took the plastic bar on the passenger side just above the glove box the airbag light would turn on everytime
i start the car and would remain off. check the wire leading to the bar and see if it's connected. don't know if it's the problem
but checking it won't hurt.

thanks guys! ill check the fuses tomorrow. mine is an 02 renegade, it has a silver flat trim piece there on the passenger side, it doesnt have the grab handle with the passenger airbag light on it. i noticed those 2 sensors on either side of the radiator, and they are both plugged in solid and i dont notice any nicks anywhere there

How did this shake out? My light is on since getting it back from the SFA project. Not too concerned, but would like to fix it in the near future.
Anyone have something showing where the sensors are located? Sure I can find them but thought it would save me some time.

The drivers side is circled in the above pic, there's one on the other side of the raditor also.

I would be more concerned about them turning your steering wheel with it disconected from any steering gear and messing up the clockspring. That would mean the driver's airbag won't go off in a crash. That's where I would start first, maybe get the code first to make sure though.
