The coolant in my XJ was froze up so I had to drive the KJ. It was -28 yesterday and the KJ fired up, but the windshield wiper fluid was froze up.

I thought it was cold here this morning. It was 19° this morning when I got up, it seemed cool in inside too. I did not want to get out of bed.
I had MY CRD plugged in to a timer to run the block heater from 4 to 7 am and it started just fine. MPG it says I been gettin is no good but I don't seem to be using more of my tank than normal.

I'm calling BS on this one... NOAA's chart shows -35 with a 60 mph wind get's you to -84... This chart indicates that with an air temp of -35, even under the old system of measuring wind chill, you get to -200 when the wind reaches about 350 mph.

Hahaha, I bet he was having a hard time getting to class!

Was the block frozen solid in the xj dieselenthusiast?

Coldest I can remember here is 5F and I had to walk like 2 miles to class.. Not sure I would ever live anywhere that got colder than that.

Well, I changed the coolant a few months ago after buying the XJ (I used two jugs of coolant and topped off with distilled water but never checked the freezing point). The jeep has the factory block heater, and it was plugged in the night before. Anyway, I fired up the XJ like I always do and let her warm up. Approximately 10 minuets later I came back outside and the fan blower was still blowing cold air and the temperature needle was ¾ up on the gauge. I put it in drive and drove down the road about 1 mile and the temperature needle went straight to the red and the check engine light came on. So I pulled over, shut off the engine, and let her cool for 5 minuets and then started her back up and headed home. I just assumed that the coolant had froze up in the radiator. So after 3-4 days went by, I plugged the Jeep in last night knowing that today would be much warmer (about 20 degrees). This morning the jeep was blowing hot air within a few minuets of warming up and the temperature gauge never rose above the normal operating temperature. I drove a few miles and there seems to be no problems. The next time I go to town I’ll buy a coolant tester and see where the freeze point is.

Kinda hard to believe the block froze if you had the block heater plugged in. Guess the radiator could of slushed up which didnt let the coolant flow.

Its pretty sad this time of the year and in the spring. Im a member over on some boat forums and threads are all over the place right now about how to winterize an engine.. Come spring all the threads are "help! my block is cracked!" :?
