Rear ended by Infinity QX4

My wife baby and i were on our way home when a car in front of us decided to make a quick left. I hit the brakes and the 17 yr. old behind me didn't hit his brakes in time and nailed the back end of my 05 Liberty Renegade. THANK GOD for the spare tire. It took the brunt of the impact. The spare tire rim is bent and the brackets holding the tire on bent into the rear tailgate denting in the rear gate. Now the rear tailgate will not close w/o being slammed shut. Bumper is cracked as well. Of course the kid didn't think there was much damage but after looking at it more closely it really appears as though there is more damage than thought. Anyone else had any similar accidents? Anyone want to estimate how much the repairs will be.

I've taken [i]extremely[/i] good care of this vehicle and was actually looking to sell it to get a larger SUV. Now the accident will show on the Carfax report won't it? UGH!!!! I'll never get what I want out of it now.

Not sure on the cost of replacement, but what I have done in the past is settle it without involving the insurance company.
What I did was get a repair estimate from the shop, then had the person who rearended me pay the bill. It saved us both from higher insurance bills & it did not show up on my XJ's carfax record.

Just a thought.

North Carolina Highway Patrol was called and report was filed. I don't trust a stranger living up to their end of the bargain. I'm willing to bet there is at least $2000 damage. The back bumper along can't be cheap. The rim has got to be $400-$500 and the whole tailgate is high too I'm sure. My insurance shouldn't go up since he was cited for not stopping to avoid an accident. Clearly he was in the wrong.

If the kid didn't want to go that route, I would take the money, order a Rock Lizard rear bumper with tire carier, and then have the gate repaired w/o the tire carier, just get a smooth gate. I think you will actually still pocket money. The rear cover is real expensive especially figuring it is just plastic! I paid $500 3 years ago to fix my tailgate and fill the holes where the tire carier was. And to fix a tree crease in the passenger side doors :roll:

if you trade it in I wouldn't worry about the car fax report, the dealer just wants to sell a car. If you sell it out right just have a copy of the repair record showing what was done. I don't think a bumper skin and or door replacement would be a deal breaker.

My grandparents were from Greensboro, Robinhood Drive.

Some one brushed up against me backing up. It scuffed the paint on my bumper, rear fender flare and broke the tail light. Damage was $650, the tail light alone was $140. $2000-$3000 would be my estimate. If you're trying to keep the cost down I recommend getting your parts off of eBay or from a salvage yard. I saw a new tailgate on there for $99 + $150 shipping, wheels are about $125, not sure what dealer cost would be.

Dealer cost on rims is just stupid. You can get 5 new rubicon rims for what they charge for 1 new rim. I would say around 2k. How much damage did it do to the other car? Thats what you want to worry about, of he had more damage, you came out on top!!

Oh. he's screwed. He needs a new bumper, hood, quarter panel, grill and drivers side light, turn signal. Like I said, that tire saved us. It bent the brackets that hold the tire on and dented in the back tailgate pretty good. Now it will not shut properly. The bumper is cracked too.

It's never fun dealing w/ insurance companies so it will be interesting to see what his insurance co. has to say about it. His fault.. their bill.

I'm just really worried about depreciation...

The tailgate is about 1000 dollars to get repaired or replaced. I damaged mine just slightly once and got about 5 different quote. All right around 1000 dollars. Just about the same to replace it as it was to fix it. If it is bend bad it is probably cheaper just to replace it. There is some c-channel inside the gate that is difficult to fix. However, 300 of those dollars where just installation and removal of the gate. So if you can do it yourself that will save you 300 dollars.

The taillight is about 120 new from the dealer (yes the garbage truck put the garbage can back a little too close to my Jeep). You can get used ones off e-bay or out of a junk yard for about 30 dollars though. The bumper is probably about 200-250 plus another 300 or so for paint if it is a limited and I guess 100 for the install.

No for the spare and mounting bracket. Well I don't have a clue

So around 2 grand sound about right.

If it were me and I had time on my hands I might just take the money from the insurance to have everything replaced and fix it up myself. Install the gate myself, get a used taillight, rim and tire. Get a used bumper off a junkyard (car-part.com) or (bumpers.com) You could pocket 600 out of the accident but it probably take up most of your Saturday and some more phone calls.

Bumper unpainted = $210
Rim = $225
Tire = cheap

I don't see how you are able to be on the computer with all the pain you are in. He was cited too...Ah man. Amen.

That should cover all of your upgrades. Rock lizard, ARB Bumper, Boulder bars, Tires, Lifts and all.

I am glad you have said the three of you were unhurt, however if you and your wife don't go see the doctor take the child to be seen. I had the same expirence and dont want to relive it. A free once over from the doc wont hurt and it CYA.

my wife was rear ended in our 03 renegade. ttl charges to have the rim replaced along with the ENTIRE tailgate assembly was aroud 3k. good thing the other person had insurance.

I got rear ended by a drunk driver going around 45 mph. Totalled his Chevy S10....$2800.00 damage to my Jeep. That jerk didn't have insurance and had his license suspended four years prior. Tried to start a fight with the EMT because he thought the dude was giving him a breathalizer test. Dumb booty had already confessed to the witnesses that he was hammered and taking some sort of drugs while I was coming back to consciousness in the Jeep. Knocked me sill needless to say.

Yeah.. 17 yr old in a QX4. Unreal. Where was my silver spoon? He was a nice kid though and first words out of his mouth were, "Are you ok." He was really upset about it. I would hate hate to be the one to introduce him to the real world. I'll leave that to the next guy.

I hope you didn't give the "kid" too hard of a time. Accidents happen. I know its hard for some of you older drivers to believe, but MOST of us younger drivers are better than you older ones. Look at some statistics. We have gone through multiple driver's ed programs, and are more familiar with the rules of the road since we took the driver's test within the last few years. The problem comes with our high testosterone levels. Some like to drive fast and reckless. That, my dear friends, is where the steriotypes come from. I hope the kid's parents didn't give him that car. I can't stand parents who hand their kids cars-especially expensive ones. What is that teaching them? I bought my own Jeep with my own sweat and blood. I just think that is how it should be.

Umm...I think you need to check the statistics...drivers 15-20 are the most dangerous and inexperienced drivers on the road and are responsible for the most deaths and accidents per capita compared to any other age group. That 17-year-old is a kid and is much less experienced that every one of us 'old' folks on here.

Glad to hear that everyone is alright. Nothing worse than suffering pain that someone else inflicts on you.

I have been rear-ended twice - first time was a poor schmuck who got caught between me and an idiot who wasn't paying attention. The LTD in back hit the F150 behind me so hard it pushed him into me and bent the LTDs hood up at a 45 degree angle. My damage was a bent taligate from the spare being pushed in, wound up being about $1700 if I remember correctly. Second time was a mexican national who tapped me at about 5-10mph. Her little Ford station wagon needed a whole new front clip, but all I saw on mine was a scuff on the bumper cover. I think my rear hitch was the reason her front end was toast, but hey it was her fault. Amazing that people can't see a bright red vehicle right in front of them.

i got rear ended when i had kj parked around school and let me tell you those brackets are made out of cardboard. They bend so easily and as a matter of fact they get out of shape more than the tailgate does.....and what realy pissed me off was that the piece of metal costs 70 dollars but thank god for ebay....20 dollars
