If you had it in part time on black top, then thats bad. Full time only on black top. Maybe the collar was hitting the cross member?

The vibration was intermitten and it felt like the front was binding too much in turns. So I took the diff collar off and went off-roading again today and the vibration was gone. The clanking noise that I was getting also was gone as well.

On a side note in dry conditions I'm very impressed with the climbing ability of the 06's with ESP. I went up some real steep stuff. I mean REAL steep with some articulation involved. I'm loving how I never seem to kill the engine with the CRD. My friend with a Ford Ranger with a little 4 banger has to really rev his engine up to get the torque to climb the steep hills then he invariably kills the engine just at the wrong time right in the middle of the hill. I can go up anything with low rpms and not stall the engine. Went up a hill that you would probably need lockers to get up. ESP Rocks! As long as you are on dry ground.

Catherine

Yes, I went off up in the hills by myself. I know I'm not supposed to go alone bla bla bla

That is kinda wierd since the collar does not spin...but a couple of things could have happened. Maybe, but not likely, the collar was too tight and deformed the tailshaft and caused the tolerance of the bearings to change...or like the posted above said...engine vibration caused the noise. The CRDs come with different motor mounts (maybe liqid filled) that might allow more movement that the 3.7L V6 motor mounts. I have not installed mine on my CRD yet, so I am just speculating.

I don't know where the noise was coming from but I think the collar was hitting the crossmember that runs underneath it under rough road conditions. Now that the collar is off I don't have that weird vibration or noise

The diff is mounted via metal brackets, no bushings to allow any movement. Now, the bolt holes are slotted to allow adjustment, so if you hit it real hard, or the bolts had come loose, the dif could move on those slotted holes.

BTW, I did get mine to work, and it actually quieted my noise, so I think my pinion bearings are either going bad or my diff was getting ready to go...

The mounting plate that is replaceable on the front diff has a big rubber bushing built in...noise probably caused by movement under rough conditions.

Well, my KJ was new when I bought it but not so new now expecially with all the scratches. I don't post all the time. I'm usually out off-roading instead of sitting here on this board talking about it and trying to be the one with the most posts.

Just FYI - called John to purchase mine today (thinking I was way late for the group buy) and he is still offering the group buy price!

I'm selling my front Diff collar that I had bought with the group buy.

Price is $65. I'll pay for shipping West of the Mississippi River, East of the river add $5.00 to the price.

PM me if interested

Catherine

I'd reinstall it with some rubber between the collar and the cross member to see if that takes care of your noise. Just a thought.

No I'm afraid it won’t. The front dif. on CRD's are mounted differently. The diesel version is closer to the crossmember and there is not enough clearance for the ring. I have looked at several 05-06 liberty’s both gas and diesel and they are all the same. I forgot the measurements but it's only about 3/8' of space diesel and something like 1'' for gas.

Mine is for sale too if anyone needs.

From her earlier post:

I think we're talking about different issues. She already had hers mounted up so fitment is not an issue...just the noises/vibrations it caused. If she can place a piece of rubber or poly between the collar and cross member it might take care of it.

It might fit the differential just fine. But I bet the vibrations are from collar rubbing the Crossmember. Mine fits just fine too if wedge it between them. Then while running with it on. Its transferring vibrations thru the Crossmember.

Right, so a piece of rubber between the two pieces could help. She definitely has more room to work than you because she got it to fit and the vibrations were only intermitant.

Yep mine was resting right up against the member...CRD also. I would have to "turn down" the outside diameter about 1/2 of the thickness to have a chance for no contact. If anyone wants one...$60.00.
