I air down my M/Ts to 20 PSI when snow completely covers the roads as it has recently and once again today. I'm not sure why, but the traction is much better. I think you only have to worry about tire flotation in very deep snow. The expanded tread also enhances my M/Ts ability to self-clean, it seems, and I only have a hard time in the fresh powder when it's higher than the body of the KJ.

I understand the narrow concept, that is why the older VW bugs did so well in the snow.

But, would snow not be like sand? My reading has suggested to air down tires for sand. Maybe the sand has a harder base? Would not narrow tires also be good in sand as well?

I am using 245 snow tires right now and they are great in snow and icey roads. I could still fly into a ditch though! On a muddy dirt road the snow tires are awful...I could barely drive a straight line.

I think the idea behind narrow snow tires (before the lift I used 225 snows) is to not ride on the fluffy snow and to actually get the tires to meet road. Different concept compared to cruising a beach in NC, where the goal is to stay on top since the hard stuff is probably wayyy below the surface.

So now that I've used 225's and 245's I can say there is little difference. Both are great on hard packed snow roads/ice. And on fresh snow covered roads, both sizes work well to about 30-35 mph with turning.

All you selec trac owners: LUCKY DUCKS. The command trac is fine and good, I just wish I could have afforded the full time...
