when i got my kit with 2 filters and gasket it was only like $15
Hastings is alot better of a filter than fram will ever be,hence the cost.

BUt make sure it only has one filter and not a spin on style one or it is for the 45 which runs a little more money than the 42 kit.

So to clarify (for my personal benefit)

42's use only 1 Trans filter
45's use 2 trans filters

Just want to get my head straight

Speaking of filters do you also need to replace the gasket (or will that RTV stuff work just as well)?

A gasket is much easier to use and performs fine. I have used both and had good results but prefer a gasket.

The filter I have, from Carquest is P/N 96062. It is made by SPX/Filtran.
AFAIK, it is the same filter that NAPA sells.

When getting the transmission fluid changed would it be best to go to the dealer, or to a shop which specializes in transmissions like Aamco, or Cottman........................................................or somewhere else?

It would only be best if you don't think you can handle doing the job yourself. NOBODY is going to take the time and use the amount of care that you will when working on your own vehicle. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, shop around at a few shops that do a lot of transmission servicing and chose one you are comfortable with. Make sure they are using ATF+4 and not ATF+3 plus an additive package, etc. If you want to be done with this for a long time to come then be sure to find a shop that will also do the change w/ a full synthetic fluid.

Shop some local private owned shops. Pick their brain and see if they impress you. Maybe you will find a good, local mechanic for any future work.

I like the picture of the family that runs the joint in the first one.
They look honest.
Doesn't mean I won't see them tonight on a Dateline NBC undcover investigation though !

Go in and challenge them on that type of thing. Feel them out. Run them through the BBB. Show up during the middle of the day and watch the shop. Talk to a mechanic or two to get a feel for the place. There are still many honest garages out there, you just have to do some footwork to find them.
