Okay, now I know what you are talking about...because I experienced it last Saturday while rotating the tires on my Jeep. As I tightened a lug nut and slid the wrench off of the nut, the cap came off too. I tapped it back on and it hasn't fallen off...yet. In the future, if any of these covers come off, I'm going to glue them to the nuts with silicone sealant.

My '85 Pontiac has black, plastic lug nut covers; but they screw onto threads on the outer surface of the actual lug nuts. In twenty years, I have never lost one.

My brother-in-law is the Jeep brand manager at Daimler-Chrysler. he explained that if a company like Chrysler (all other do this too) can save a dime on a vehicle by cutting the cost of lug nuts; multilply that times 100,000 vehicles and they just saved $10,000. And thats for one item on one model. Now they save $1.00 on reducing sound deadening materials, and $0.25 on coated fasteners instead of stainless steel, and $10.00 by making the only the seating surface of your leather seats leather and the rest vinyl, and on and on and you can see how much money they save and also how they can offer stuff you really need and want at a price you can afford. It's all economics. They all value-engineer their products constantly. It is necessary to stay competitive, but it removes quality.

When a cap comes off I cut a piece of electrical tape to fit over one side of the nut, tap the cover on with a rubber maillot. move on.

Yeah, but didn't those 85 pontiacs catch fire? Just kidding, my 85 pontiac still has its black plastic covers, unfortunately they dont fit on the liberty, I think the black would go good on the silver rubicon rims.

I was rotating my tires a couple of weeks ago and when I was torquing my lugs on, I heard a snap. I thought I broke a stud... Low and behold the cheapness of DCX and I now have a bad lug. (Temporarily - I swapped out one in the spare tire until I can get to the dealer)

I post up a picture of the exposed lugnut tomorrow when there is still daylight out.

(Sorry for the poor quality, my camera doesn't like taking pictures up close)
This is what a lug looks like with it's chrome 'cap' on it:

Beneath those caps are this:

I was simply torquing the lugs in place when it broke clean off at the flared (seating) end of the lug nut. It looks like they are just glued or pressed into place.

Thanks for the photos sleeve84028, I had no idea!! Well it may not be attractive, but at least you know the lug won't come off when the cap comes off.

What size nut are those nuts that are under the cover? I guess I should keep that size in the KJ as well!

My nuts are loose and rattle. What can I do....Oh what can I do?
Some of the stuff that gets posted on here cracks me up.
I would gladly trade my covered nuts for some Bare nuts. Anyone want to mail me their Bare nuts? :-)r

This cracks me up. I was at the local Peterbilt dealer the other day and they have a barrel of nut covers sitting by the counter. Even a rig that costs over 100K uses them...
