the PCM and the other few computers it fried, tearing the kj apart to get to those said computers, the cost of the new computers, programming everything and doing what they gotta do to set it up, putting the new computers in, putting the kj back together and testing to make sure it all works. thats how they come up with the grand figure of $5,290

For that much money though you could probably buy your own DRBIII scan tool and program it yourself. The service manual tells you how to do it with the scanner. It also tells you how to program your own keys.

You need access to Chryslers mainframe to download the correct programs to the DRBIII(or Starscan) to program the computers which dealers only have access to.It can take up to 20+ hours to program many computers in a vehcile which is counted as labor hours.

When I worked at a dealer I had to replace every module in a '02 Caddy STS and program them all, total bill was over $6000 and was not covered under warrenty, all for a master key and took almost a week straight to program.

Darryl,

Sorry for your luck with the KJ. You must have gotten one that was made on a Friday afternoon or just before a holiday. A total lemon. I would be curoius about how it got fried and if the dealer's service reps are actually giving you a snow job. Same with the Chrysler rep. Did you watch them take those components out of your KJ or just showed you components? Did you go to Lithia on Havanna or that other Jeep dealership?

In a total hijack, I have no idea why that Astra is not selling better. That is a cool little car.

So you are totally bitter on jeeps now then? Sounds like the jeep was broke not a lemon or something.

He's not "bitter", but perhaps frustrated at a vehicle that has had so many issues, and now a company that will not stand behind their product. The water claim is total BS. Darryl never took that Jeep deeper than I've taken my Patriot. From what I understand, with all the transmission issues, that Libby has been a lemon from the start, this was the icing on the cake.

We gotta race the Focus and Legacy!

hahaha, i dont think the focus gets up to 60mph quite as effortlessly as a subaru legacy. while the focus is peppy and it doesn't FEEL like 9.7 seconds, 60mph takes a little bit of patience and commitment

Bummer. If you like the Ford then good. I made the jeep to car transition once. Traded it in after 3 months. Jeep are in my blood.
I know how that is. But I managed to stick it out 10 months. :p

I'm glad you like your new Focus.

But man you had a good lookin' Libby. ;) Too bad it was a POS. :(

You know, for anyone coming into similar circumstances, that guy's word is not the final say on a claim being denied if it is a factory warranty. There are avenues of appeal. I have heard of it not taking a huge amount to get such a decision reveresed. Maybe sometimes they do this just to get people to give up?

If there is water damage there should be physical evidence on the PCM circuitry. I've taken apart many laptops under warranty claim and some of them you can see the water damage. These ones of course are not covered under warranty.

I had a civic that i bought with a salvage title and after a few weeks i had problems with the computers. The dealership wanted $2400.00 for the computer so i went to a auto salvage and picked one up for $ 100.00!!! After 20 mins it was working perfect. I hope you like the focus.

thats just it, im not buying anything like that for any money from anywhere. this jeep was no salvage title jeep, it was a $26,490 1.8 miles on the odo when i bought it jeep. chrysler should have picked up the tab and the computers shouldnt have gotten water in them. i dont care if checkers auto had kj computers for free in a bin that said "take one", I WOULD NOT fix it, chrysler should and since they didnt it can sit in their service bay and they can pay for it.

AMEN! I know a few people, like my dad, that will put their time, effort and hard earned money into something that should be covered under a warranty. I firmly believe, even if the computers were submerged (which never happened) that a failure of their water-proofing or seals is a manufacturing defect. I'm not sure how one could abuse the computers off-road - that is what the Libby is made for, right?

But again, this is all beside the point. Darryl had many issues with his Libby, and decided that the stress involved was not to his liking. Not to mention he has something WAY more economical to drive now. Besides, if he wants to get off road, he has LOST and his Wrangler buddies! It's just too bad he didn't get a Patriot now, or in the first place 8)

The Legacy is pretty sluggish too, it's not a GT.

but aren't you still sort of paying for it? I mean if you trade in a fully running great condition vehicle you get more trade in value than if you trade in a non running one, or did they cut you some kind of deal? Can not see any dealer giving you top dollar for something that is not running?

just curious

I am sorry to hear about your woes with your Jeep. I hate to see people give you their Jeeps for other vehicles, but I do understand. Wheel what ever you can, when ever you can. Just get out there and wheel! lol

Yeah, they screwed you with the warranty claim and then you got screwed again by giving them the jeep, that they could fix and sell, plus they sold you another car. Win win win for the dealer. It won't cost them $5,290 to fix it so of course they want you to give it to them, they already have a bunch of your cash from payments and buying the KJ in the first place too, and now they can sell your jeep and make the money back it cost to fix it and then some.

the real question is do i give a f***? im sure youre smart enough to figure out the answer to that AND the focus is actually not from that dealer, jeep just paid for me using it from another dealer. the jeep dealer had no demos available and what business is it of you guys? if i recall i never posted asking for help on my down payment or monthly payment. lets worry about problems that concern us please...
