The CRD has the mechanical fan AND the electric fan. It is a PITA to get it all apart (like on most vehicles). Generally speaking if your heater core was leaking it would leak inside the cab or you would be able to smell coolant when you run your heater. The viscous heater pump could be the culprit but its right on top on the left side (as you are facing the front of the engine) and a leak there is usually obvious because it gets all over the rest of the engine. You can get a UV dye from some parts stores and you just dump like an ounce in your coolant tank, start it up and let it cycle through the system a couple of times (just let it idle until your engine temp has been at or above normal for 5 or 10 minutes) then shine a black light around and the dye will light up like a Christmas tree. Even if its a small leak you can usually spot it right away. I have no idea what it costs though.

I think I might have located the source of my coolant leak. When I went to lunch today, I noted the puddle on the ground was under the rear of the engine. I was racking my brain as to why it might be back there; EGR valve. When I did the replacement some weeks ago, I could not get the hoses off the valve so I cut them and extended the hoses with joiners and clamps. I think that one of the 6 clamps might have got loose. Going to check tonite.
