It's because they don't take into account the difference between the Sport/Limited and the Renegade. The Renegade has 2" diameter side bars, whereas the sport/limited are much thinner. If you have a sport/limited, I think you will be able to make it work, but if they say it doesn't fit the renny, I'd believe it. Not many things will fit the renny roof - yakima, thule, and mopar all have ways to get crossbars up there, and then you can attach whatever you want. It's more expensive, but the result will be much better.
You can get the Crossroad 450 for $110 from REI if you want to drive to an REI to pick it up (see my other post about this), crossbars are < $50, and you can get a ski/board rack for another $100. Total is ~$250 or so, and it'll be worlds nicer than the $175 setup, and you can easily replace the ski/board rack with bikes, kayaks, baskets, liights, etc.
