I had heard they changed the Regs that you aren't suppose to do mouth to mouth anymore... apparently they found it didn't help as much.

Was Qualified at one time been over the two years so I need a ReQual...
My flight school did it some time ago however its been a bit since I've been around there....

Mike

PS. Good idea for the club!

The move towards not teaching mouth to mouth in BLS for 'the public' was based on research which showed that a high percentage of people didn't do it anyway as they were concerned about direct contact with a stranger.....although it is still mandatory in ALS teaching. CPR training for the masses in the UK tends to focus on chest compressions and early AED use...since we have a target time of paramedic at patients side of 8 minutes from time of call.

As a newcomer to the list I think its great that so many of you guys have taken the time to pick up the skills! Very well done and thanks on behalf of the EMS community :D

BTW a bit about me: ICU Specialist, British Army Doctor, ALS Instructor, Combat Casualty Care Inst, HEMS Doc, UK ambulance service Doc...and lots more!

ps. for the military guys on the list....our experiences in Op Telic esp. some of the roadside casualties around Basra has changed the way we teach casualty assessment to the troops. We used to teach ABC...whereas now we teach Major Haemorrhage,ABC. We found we were losing a few guys using the old technique..on the basis that its no use resuscitating a blood empty body

One thing I wish is that the American Red Cross and American Heart Association (AHA) come up with ONE standardized program.

First: Two years for Red Cross to get recertified is ridiculous. If peope never practice or use their training, they will have forgotten a majority of it by one year. I teach classes monthly and get many people that are recertifying and they pause for lengths of time before remembering what to do next or they do thing wrong. It needs to be a standard one year refresher.
Second: When I get Red Cross trained personnel, they have a habit of doing it the way they were taught and not by AHA standards regardless of the training I give them.

I have been trained since 1984 and the requirements have changed a lot. One problem is I get people coming into class to recertify and I hear them say, is it still 15-1, 5-1, or 5-2?

Paramedic and EMT Inst. along with ACLS, BTLS and CPR Inst. Also Firefighter Inst.

I think that they should make CPR a requirement for High School Students to Graduate.

I agree. What could it hurt for kids moving out into the real world to have a concept of how to help if someone needs it? I have qualified CPR/First Aid several times over the past (x number of) years but I find I am due for requal. Good thing to add to my list of things to do. :)

I graduated class of 2005. We had to take and pass a health class. In order to pass we had to perform CPR on an adult and an infant dummy. We also had demonstrate proper heimlich manuever for ourselves, on another adult, and infants. It also included basic first aid as well, fail any one of these and you don't pass the class, don't pass the class and you didn't graduate. I am sure a lot of other high schools do this too (i hope)

CPR cert.'ed as well, among other 'self aid buddy care' techniques. Never know when a newbie is gonna taste their first batch of JP-8 when servicing my herky birds.
