Gotta be motor or torque converter.

Just FYI

The 05's have better engine breaking . I remember reading it somewhere before I got the 05. I think like mentioned before, it has to do with the torque converter.

For those of you driving to Moab on I-70 from the East, you will find out what engine braking is all about when you hit the Rockies and go downhill. You also will experience the wonders of 4500-5000 RPM every few seconds just to keep your speed up going up.....especially if you are towing a trailer.

I know the feeling Dave. Going up to the San Jaun's towing a trailer is quite a bit of work. Going down you need to use both engine braking and brakes. Wasn't really that bad.

Huh ... I was wondering ... I drive down a long steep hill pretty often, 35mph speed limit, I just drop to 2nd when going down the hill and don't use the brakes, it holds 35mph just fine ... but I drive an '05.

I wonder if there is an updated ECU flash for prior years that would take care of the problem?

Maybe that is a possibility. The other alternative is that we change out the torque converter but taht might be a little expensive...

I think i know why the 05's do better with engine braking. They have a tranny called 42rle vlp. I dont know what this means but its been brought up a couple of times now. It could be an even more car like tranny, but if it has better engine braking, i guess its good to go. Im just glad i got my 04 libby. The tranny seems to be doing just fine in everyone's libby that tows big loads, so im ok with it.

I have to drop down to 5th on the highway when I get to a hill if I have a lot of passengers and/or cargo and want to maintain speed. Haven't had any trouble engine braking, but I'll admit, I don't often have those long hills where you need to use it. But I suppose since I don't even have a torque converter, it makes sense that I would have no problem.

Thats just because you were lucky enough to get a manual on your KJ. Don't rub it in - it brings tears to my eyes...

just kidding...

I have the 45rfe. It is a truck transmission that is used behind the Hemi. It behaves like a truck transmission and is a fairly stout piece of hardware. I have driven the 42rle and it is a smooth "car-like" transmission. Great for the highway with it's smooth shifts-probably not as stout as 45 though. The actual compression ratio is what slows the vehicle down during engine breaking. If the gear ratios are identical and the compression ratio is identical then the problem is in the torque converter. I would be willing to bet that the 42 tranny uses a different torque converter with a different stall speed.

Since the converter acts as the cupling between the engine and transmission, I'd also venture to say the converter is the problem with lack of engine braking.

I've always hated the way this tranny shifts in any kind of slow speed changes. Like taking a corner in an intersection, and gently hitting the gass afterwards, it thinks about shifting, then it shifts, or doesnt... I am really considering getting mine checked out, but I would be willing a LOT of this stuff has to do with the converter.
