Yeah I have access to a 35mm axle nut socket.
I got myself a tub of CV grease.
I put my lift in and in two other KJ's.

I was more worried if there was a special way to pull out the intermediate shaft.. I'm assuming you just pull (pry) pretty hard?

Then to put it in, you push just as hard?

Can't wait! 8)

Mine popped right out with very little prying, not a big deal. No special tools needed, I wouldnt stress if you cant get the old intermediate shaft out of the cv though.

Update:
On a brisk Sunday morning, I mentally prepared myself for the task at hand; Changing the Passenger side CV and Intermediate Shaft. I was with DoubleK and TJS2010.

By the time the afternoon hit, Everything had gone pretty smoothly.

The actual removal of the old CV & Intermediate Shaft, and the installation of the new CV & Intermediate Shaft was EXTREMELY EASY. The part of the process I was dreading the most, was the easiest part. I had a little trouble putting my suspension back together, but in the end everything turned out perfectly.

The new Intermediate shaft from Eric at Automotive Parts Unlimited, 800-270-5224 in NJ was about $90. It came with both clips, one for each side.

I tried to pull the Intermediate shaft apart from the CV once, then didn't care to try harder, lol. When I brought it back to NAPA, he said "how come it doesn't fit in the box, what is that?". I said "That's the Intermediate shaft." And left it at that, lol.

I want to thank everyone who gave me advice and tips on how to change the CV.

I have two questions..
-Is there a break in period with the new CV?
-This is what the CV Boot looks like right now..
(The picture is shot from the front of the Jeep. The left hand side of the picture is the passenger side.)
Image

Is that fold in the boot on the left something I should worry about?

Thanks again!! 8)

Awesome! I was worried about the boot being folded over the the outer clamp. I didn't want it to put too much stress on it when it rotated.

Yes, you should be worried about the boot being folded over like that. The clamp will eventually wear a hole in the boot.

Look at this:

Seems strange that a very few have problems with boots tearing and a lot of us have thousands of miles and no problems?
I would be trying to determine what maybe causing the boots to tear before blaming it all on the boots as the cause.
I have some Rockford here that seems real good, but then they are older ones that came to me by way of Al, (the original Jeepinby Al )

Honestly I have no idea. I know that the ones that came on the NAPA remanned CV, always looked funny to me.
This is how it is sitting right now.

I agree with the above very much.

I have seen remaned CV's and those "new" CV's come with torn boots. As many know it is very easy to knick a CV boot while installing in a KJ(lift or CV shaft on a lifted KJ).

I'm not trying to sound rude in any way.. I'll admit, I don't know that much, I'm learning as I go along.
What should I do to try to determine what may be causing the boots to tear?

The first NAPA one I got for the right side had a tiny nick( cut ) from them putting them together ( or the clamp on really) They didn't even notice it, but they sent it back and got me another one.
I always try and wrap the boots good when installing them because there is not a lot of room esp when lifted

Have they all been torn in the same area/section
Have they all lasted about the same time frame
What does it look like, torn/jagged/nice neat cut or?
things along those lines

Both have been the Passenger side CV;
The first one was the original on the Jeep. I am the original owner.
-Lift Installed
--58,250 miles - 5/15/10
-Passenger CV Joint replaced
-- 65,755 miles - 11/7/10

It ripped closer to the half shaft
Image

Second rip occurred around 66,700 miles 12/1/10
It ripped in between the first fold closest to intermediate shaft. As of right now they are only like three or four tiny holes.

Hate to say it but second one sounds like it may have been pinched during installation, causing a weak place in the fold, then after only a couple of thousand miles finished tearing through.

I don't wheel too often. And I do clean the truck pretty well. From when I replaced the CV until the new one ripped I didn't take it off road.
I do put a lot of highway miles on it though.

Definitely possible. I did check everything pretty closely though, since it was my first time changing it. Unless it was pinched on the inside, then slowly broke through.
Either way it sucks.

And as usual, Thanks guys! I'll let you know how it goes.

Stick with the factory mopar boot's !!! I have been dealing with (limacharlie's 02) KJ boot issue for a couple month's now and have come to the conclusion that the rockford boots are too soft as well as most aftermarket boot's. They will tear with the angle's do to the lift. I have installed the mopar boot twice only because I think I had too much air/greese and it poped off a inner clamp. The 2nd time with the mopar boot I made sure to remove all air that I could and packed the greese into the bottem of the inner shaft insted of on top of the bearing assembley . Seems to be ok now !! Like Tom said, my Kj has 70k on It and I haven't had any prob. with the factory set up !!

Any update on your CV issues Dean? I'm starting to get a whumpwhump on the pass side of the axle. Thinking it could be the intermediate shaft splnes going or gone as the CV still looks good. Wondering what happened with your sitch?
