Welcome! It's already obvious that you will get all kinds of suggestions here...most good, and all good intentioned. But remember, opinions are like @$$-holes, everybody has one. My suggestion would be to let these good folks know exactly what you've got. Model year, 4 X 4 or 2 X 4, Gasser or CRD, type and size of tires, lights, racks, etc. and they'll be better able to help you. If you plan on off-roading soon I would suggest skid plates first. I did that to my new '06 Gasser and took her stock (tires and all) to Camp Jeep '07 in Virginia and she did great, kept up with the Wranglers and totally impressed me. After that I focused on a lift and then bigger tires. One thing you can do right off is extend and raise your differential and tranny breather tubes so you can do some deep water crossings, or go muddin'. One thing for sure...if you do it right you will be totally impressed at what a modified "grocery-getter" can do. gotta love it.
John

I also know that the CV joints limit how high you can go.... more so with the CRD than Gassers but it is a factor to get 3.5 to say 4 inch and over of lift. the issue is the angle it puts the joints at wears them too hard. JBA sells a half shaft kit to help solve that but its not cheap and there is another company out there that makes something too.

I bet its hard at 17 not having much money but at least you have fewer responsibilities. Trust me it not much easier at 37 when you have a mortgage, a car payment student loan and everything else to invest in a lift. I'd trade some of what I have for a more care free life of a teen and to be that young again any day.

^ i understand.

^^ yea sorry i forgot to say it from the start. I have a 2005 jeep liberty renegade 3.7L. The previous owner had to have a new transmission put in and put new tires on (wrangler tires), the jeep had a shot engine and a couple other need fix ups so a family friend mechanic put in a refurbished engine (44k on it), new battery and engine fan and i believe thats all. I think everything else is stock. My renegade is silver without the lightbar on top :| but i do have the fog lights on the bumper, which i will also have to replace b/c the previous owner not only killed the transmission and engine but beat up the bumper, scratched up the fender flares, put stains on the interior, a couple cigarette burns and an bunch of other little imperfections.

it is my first vehicle and i know its not perfect but i love it, i think part of having a first car is having to work on it and make it your, not just having mommy and daddy buy you a brand new beamer.

You're OK in my book with just the above attitude!

Sounds like some trimming and bedliner is in order.

You'll have more fun, pride, and learn more than those kids whose parents bought them a beamer. You have the right attitude.

You will surely appreciate what you have more than the kids that ma & papa bought them what ever they wanted and take better care of it.... also learn to do the same with future cars and other things as well. For sure that is a better start than the rich BMW kids get.

Thanks for all the advice again. After saving for a while and giving the lift some good thought I've decided that i will save the lift till later. I will still save for it but will get performance parts first. I had the 77 series air intake system as my first choice. i also decided to fix up my scratched fender flares and bumpers with a plastic filler(any suggestions?) and plastic fusing spray paint. Also looking to fix up there interior, I'm looking into the weather tech floor mats and Neoprene seat covers. good thing these are all so cheap :furious: haha

Save your money on the cold air intakes as well since the stock box and a Amsoil filter is about the best you can get and cheap as well

Tomms post lines it out well. You only get 1 chance to do it right, so it might as well be the 1st time. :)
You seem to be open to advice, that puts you +100 on most others

its not after filling up either its almost all the time. i ran the engine with the hood up and could not smell it. the gas cap it on tight.

How about waiting on the lift and getting skids, a rear locker/front LSD, Some cheap mud tires, and hitting the trails! A locked KJ, will destroy a lifted KJ with open diffs off road. Get that out of the way, and when you lift it you will be unstoppable!

charcoal canister most likely. bring it to a shop and have them look at your fuel system. looked at.

Not every young person's tears in the first year of ownership, they are together, I have helped a large number of construction 4WDs and other cars / trucks, and they are very proud to participate! We are out of the way, I can not wait to see this young man and.

17 with no clue? Don't feel bad, I'm 37 with no clue  Welcome to Lost and Jeep ownership! I have a humble suggestion for your first "upgrade". Take 1,000 bucks and stick into a bank savings account. You never know when any automobile is going to give up its ghost. And regardless of upgrades, being carless stinks! Best wishes.

Bank two Sensor two would be the rear one on the passenger side. Easy to replace really

Agreed. Having to rebuild certain things on my first couple of cars made me appreciate them alot more. Im glad that it is doing that with his first jeep.
