He's referring to galvanic corrosion that occurs between two dissimilar metals in the presence of electrolyte.

There's a wikipedia page on it here.

Here.....

"Electrolytic Corrosion (Electrolysis) occurs when dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of anelectrolyte, such as water (moisture) containing very small amounts of acid. The dissimilar metals set up a galvanic action that results in the deterioration of one of them. "

If you put steel on your aluminum diff, put some thin rubber between the two, or use a rubberized coating as corrosion inhibitive.

I raised the question on one of the older collar threads and either nobody thought it was a big deal, or they didnt know what I was talking about! I ended up going with steel and couple good coats of POR15 to insulate. BTW-Dont want to jinx the group buy, but you can get a 3.5" for half the price and have it lathed??

Put me in for one, and tell me when to call.

I don't think you will jings the group buy, for there are people like me who have no experience trying to get something lathed who think the extra price is worth the lack of effort.

They probably also have an aluminum collar that won't do that...should still be plenty strong...or a marine grade that does not corrode...

They make the same part in aluminum. PN 8A309.

Shall I get a price on that tomorrow?

We've got 14 definites. I'll see what I can do about the price too, now that I'm a serious buyer worth AT LEAST $1k to him, plus future orders from LOST members. I may even take a drive down to this place in person and show him my rig, and maybe a printout of this thread so he knows we're serious.

Hey, how can I easily print out a thread?

Not to clutter up this thread but I would prefer the aluminum one but if nobody else wants the aluminum one I'll still will go for the steel one(even if not tested the money spent is still a little piece of mind in my book).

Can you check out the aluminium piece please and let us know tomorrow. I wasnt that concerned about corrosion as the steel collar will be the part that rusts, not the diff housing. And we can always coat it well with paint to prevent corrosion.

OK. No need for everyone to post tonight about alum v. steel. I'll get the prices tomorrow and post that back here. THEN we can vote.

Ideally, this guy will order whichever we want at the same price. That way we can each buy what we want.

But I guess if we can get alum for similar money, it's the better way to go, right? Based on the scientific evidence?

Are these collars aluminum or steel? If they are alloy, I may be in for another. Even though I rubber coated mine, I don't like the thought of electrolosys due to dis-similar metals.

If they are steel you could use something like Noalox or other anti-oxidizing compound. Find it in the wiring/electrical section.

Sorry, I've been out of the net for the past couple of days. I'm very interested in one of these (prefer the aluminum). Also, I would prefer to call in my order as some others have mentioned.

Add my name to the list (aluminum, call with credit card, etc.)

I'm almost on a first name basis with the customs guys with all the parts that I have been ordering. Maybe I should rethink my career and become an importer, or if I want to stretch myself and importer/exporter???

John is checking the price for the aluminum part. I'll post as soon as he calls me back.

All parts will be sent to his shop, then resent out. He'll confirm this, but was reasonably sure this is the only way to get the volume price from the factory. I spoke to him at 9am. I'll update this post when he calls me back with a price on the alumunum part. He agreed it was a good idea to go with the aluminum part. He also felt the alum part will be plenty strong for our intended use.

I bet the aluminum one would strip out easier if you torque the bolt too much, unless it's some kind of hardened aluminum.
