i wonder is there rules or laws or what ever if you bought one of those Geri cans and put diesel in it instead of gas? the reason i ask is the webco site or what ever had yellow can specifically for fuel and red for gas

The can coloration is an international thing. Cans used to be green and the fuel type was stenciled on it. Too many diesel vehicles got RUG poured in the tank and visa versa so they came up with universal coloring to match what's in the container. As far as the actual can itself, they are the same (the water cans use a different kind of paint that is non-toxic and not chemically resistant).

If you notice on this site, most of the cans are sold out. DOT changed regulations for 2009 and Wedco hasn't tooled up to make a DOT compliant can yet. They can't legally make them for sale in the U.S. unless they are DOT compliant. Last I heard, Wedco was thinking about discontinuing their manufacture of these cans all together. That would be a real shame because I didn't get mine yet :D .

I called Expedition One and talked to James, the designer and owner. He said that Wedco is designing new caps that will be 100% state legal. He’s going to use their caps for his design

I have Scepter fuel and water cans. These are made of plastic and are just great. Those are the same one that are being used by the military in Iraq and Afghanistan presently. All you have to do is to get a military gas can holder and fabricate a rack for it and you're all set. I bought some diesel cans in a military surplus for 10$ can. ea. I bought the water can for 50$ can. with shipping. These are made in Toronto but much easier to find in the US. You can also get some accessories that fits in the jerry can holder like a decontamination kit in case you want to wash your jeep after offroading. Seriously, those jerry cans are really undestroyable and come in a lot of colors. (http://www.sceptermilitary.com/fuel_containers/) There's a lot of quality in the different holders. In order of solidity, you have the jobbers red holders (pretty thin), in second place comes the US military holders which are the same as the red ones but of better quality and the steel is thicker, and in first place , the Canadian military holder from the Bombardier Iltis are great. They're 1/8" steel thick and really sturdy. I'm making a hitch rack with canadian holders for my liberty and I have a US military holder directly attached to my YJ.

Those are the same as my green plastic can, down to the little strap that holds the lid, which gives you the colour coding - yellow strap for Diesel, red strap for Gas.

I picked it up at a military surplus shop in Toronto. I'm thinking of trying to find another one, as the ones they had were in various states of (dis)repair. At the time I was there they only had a few and most of them were pretty rough (missing/broken lid straps, gaskets etc).

I would be interested in where I could find the Canadian military can holders you mention!

I don't know if these are the ones he means or not. Pretty heavy duty though and lockable too.

Those are pretty sweet... I found the source here:

http://www.adventuretrailers.com/fuel.html

Bit pricey at $79, but definitely nice!

That's good to know that they will be back in production again. I reviewed the issue and it's not a DOT compliance issue specifically. They need to make them with child-proof caps. I guess I can see the logic behind that. I have heard pretty good things about the durability of the plastic Scepter cans. I don't know. Maybe I am just old school, but I just feel in my gut that a gas can that you will attach to your vehicle needs to be metal. Now that I have said that, I will probably wind up buying plastic ones  .
