That bumper rocks! Great design, good lines, looks very well built, and I can't wait to see the swing out carrier. I also can't wait to see the finished product on my Jeep.

This prototype weighs about 60 lbs for the main bumper and 30 lbs for the arm. Once I'm done with my cost refinements it will probably be more like 55 for the main and 20 for the arm.

Speaking of the hitch...the receiver tube itself is twice the usual hitch thickness, it's 1/2" wall tube. I did this strictly to strengthen the pin hole without having to scab extra plates on. I actually buy the tube off of a company that gets it custom extruded for their products, but also sells small quantities of materials. I was able to buy 4 ft for my usual about per pound, plus about 15%, which is a steal considering typically when you buy small quanitities (less than a full stick) you pay out the rear, like 200% typical per pound cost for extrusions. Everyone that sees it sitting in my garage expresses shock and awe at the chunk of tube, and always say "what the hell are you going to do with that?!?"

I think the standard ones will be just long enough, but I haven't checked mine yet....

What about vehicles that have tow packages already?

I'm dancing around a few things with this reciever tube / hitch that is built in. I'm describing it for off-road use only. It was designed and analyzed to exceed the class 3 requirements, but I'm not going to be labeling it as such for liability reasons. So it will make a good recovery point, off road tow hitch. It will work fine as a road hitch and I will be using mine for over the road towing, but if someone uses it for that they are doing so at their own risk. Being as small as we are we just can't accept responsibility for a trailer free-bouncing down the road.

All that said, our hitch is an option. As standard, they have no reciever tube, fascia cutout, chain loops, or the tube that runs between the bumper mount angles. They probably also weigh about 20 pounds less. I haven't put weights and prices on all the options yet. Both will be fairly hefty for the tow package.

Also, if you do get a bumper with a built in tow package, it will not fit with a standard tow hitch, if for some reason you wanted to do that.

OK, so if I can be clear in my own mind (or what passes for one anyway :D ), if(when I get back in work) I ask for a bumper without the built in tow hitch, the bumper will fit with my factory tow hitch? I ask, because in England, the square tube hitch receivers that you guys use are illegal to tow on the road for any vehicle built after 1997 ( I think with the exception of some commercial applications).

To be honest I don't know anything about what you guys tow with. It will work with a standard mopar North American style hitch. I think shipping to England would cost as much as the bumper itself too...

I'd need more info on the other style tow hitch to even guess if it fits or not.

Thanks Boiler, Come the day I do get back to work (and I hope it's soon) I'll send the info to you, and we'll see if it's practical. I don't expect a problem with the factory hitch to be honest - it's a MOPAR recommended part from the dealer - it's just that it's a detachable 25mm towball as opposed to the box tube you have over there. As for shipping - I had to ship in my front bumper from Aus, and I expect to have to do the same for my suspension come the day. No-one here keeps aftermarket stuff for the KJ - too little demand, so any major bits have to be specially ordered and brought in. This here's Landrover country
