I am going to join this group by as well. But its funny, I still can't believe this will work. From other threads the general consensus is the failure is caused by internal vibrations on the weak case. I'm in though...I'm in...

really? I hadn't read that except in relation to my specific issue of the backlash being out of spec from the factory. But my case didn't crack. Instead, my bearings wore out.

I feel stupid for asking this...

Isn't steel stronger than aluminum??? So why use an aluminum colar?

I may get in on this.

read the whole thread. There were facts brought up about how it's not a good idea to mix two different types of metals like we were going to do, when they may come in contact with certain acids and other chemicals (like in salt water, etc). It can weaken one of the metals. Always better to keep the same types of metals in contact with each other.

It was news to me. Seemed worth the $5 extra. And everyone also agrees that for our purposes, this aluminum will be plenty strong.

Miah,

The steel against aluminum isn't a good idea do to electrolosys caused by the dissimilar metals. When the steel starts to rust, it will cause the aluminum to pit and become weaker.

I used the steel McMaster-Carr collar, but I painted it with rubberized paint hoping to prevent that.

Please understand that everyone is responsible for placing their own orders and making shipping arrangements. I just set up the contact and negotiated the price.

Until I tell him to place the order.

I figure we have 20 folks who said definitively they wanted it over the course of 2 days or so. They should place their orders within the next few days so we can all get our parts on the way since it takes 3 weeks to arrive.

Let's go folks!

Just so people understand, the aluminum collar should be plenty strong...like adding a rib in aluminum casting...just make sure it is snug but don't go crazy. If the case is heading for a catestrophic failure the collar might not be enuff to stop it but it might help hold together the front so you can limp home easier. Otherwise it will help strengthen the area and make breakdown less likely.

I feel like putting collars everywhere... case axle ends, transfer case, tranny...not really

You're on the list.

LISTEN FOLKS, please post after you place the order. I'm thinking we close this down and place the group buy once we hit 15 or Wednesday, whichever comes first.
