Anyone do this? I'm going to put a a ski/snowboard rack on the liberty for sure before this winter.
I was thinking about going with a more versatile roof cargo basket instead, if I can find a way to safely carry my snowboard equipment. I live in an apartment, so having both isn't an option due to lack of storage space.

Let me know if you do this and how you strap everything down so the skis don't get messed up.

Thanks.

I toss mine in the back with the seats down. Of course, I drive there alone and only being 68" tall, my board isn't real long.

I'm not too much of a fan of throwing it in the back, especially when you consider that you can't get all the snow off before you throw it in the back. Plus, it is hard to fold the seats down with people sitting there!

For $180 you can get a spare tire mounted ski/board rack (I am going to make one out of all of my old Thule stuff). Baggage goes on top in a roof top bag (sits between factory roof rail, weather proof, has straps for attaching to roof rail-walmart $25) or basket rack for me. Leaves behind the seat for the cooler, boots, and the portable grill etc.... I like the idea of a rear mounted ski rack, no more mucking about on the roof every day when you are skiing...

I thought about this as well. I haven't tried it yet but i was thinking about flipping the board upside down so the bindings sit in the basket and then strap it down. Should be fine I think.

I had a Thule rack that attached to the crossbars several years back and a wake board fit up there. Not sure about the spare tire rack though.

With the spare tire racks do you find that you when you get there/get home your board/skis are covered in road salt? I'm trying to figure out what kind of set up I want to get and I'm just worried that my stuff will get destroyed from all the road salt.

Advantages I see to the spare tire mount are, they seem to be cheaper and it's probably not as bad on gas.

Advantages to the roof are, it's cleaner and you can mount a bike rack on the side as well as the ski/board rack in the middle.

Every time I see a set of boards on a spare tire rack they are moving all over the place from the wind. I've got a wide board that's 168 cm long which I think would end up over the top. can the spare tire mount really hold the added weight? I get worried that after a few seasons the mount will crack or the door hinge will wear out.

I use the Yakima powder hounds and the megawarrior roof basket. Has worked very well.

I'm not sure about Thule, but if you get a Yakima basket like the LoadWarrior or MegaWarrior baskets, then the other Yakima ski / board racks will mount to those baskets. The round bars on the baskets are the same size as the regular round Yakima cross bars. What about one of those hard plastic cargo carriers that mount on the roof. I'd think one of those would be very useful. They can carry skis, boards as well as any other gear. The long skinny cargo carriers would have no problem carrying skis. Just a thought. I have the Yakima LoadWarrior basket, but I don't ski so I'm no help there.

Edit: Something like this: Image
