Post subject:  whats a good muffler for a 3.7?

Hello, I installed a aftermarket muffler on my wifes liberty and wouldnt you know it sounds like a fart pipe now. Is there a aftermarket muffler you suggest, and also do you pick up that much more with a complete cat-back system fro either JBA, Magnaflow or Gibson. One last thing ; could you please tell me how big the stock exhaust pipe is? The ones that have changed the muffler, went with a cold air intake and differnt programming on the ecu did you pick any noticable power and did it help the fuel economy?

Thanks
Joe

What kind of muffler did you get?

Most people here will tell you not to bother with a cat-back system, as the stock exhaust tubing is 2.5" mandrel-bend tubing; the aftermarket exhaust systems currently available aren't any bigger.

Lots of people here run the Flowmaster 40 series or the 50 series SUV muffler, as the muffler seems to be the limiting factor in the stock exhaust system. The 40 series is the least restrictive/loudest of the two. If you want to hear a 40 series, check out this guy's 2 KJ videos: http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=whatadog. I'm debating purchasing one myself, as it sounds a bit raspy, but with a V6 it's not going to sound much better than that, plus at fairly low RPM's it seems to have a pretty good rumble to it.

I have the 40 series on mine and I like it. It is a little loud on the inside though so if thats a problem for you then you should go for the 50 series.

Theres two links I think to a magnaflow system sound, and a Dynomax system installed on a CRD.

Thats a link to pics of my Borla muffler only.

In honesty, the Magnaflow catback sounds just like my Borla muffler, except a bit hollower sounding (or not, because the guy who recorded the clip may have used a crappy microphone incapable of doing the Magnaflow kit its justice). If you take a look at the actual Magnaflow system though, the muffler looks about the same size as the OEM one (with different internals of course [baffled design]). My Borla is a pretty compact straight through design (glasspack). The Borla complete catback system goes for between $500-$700 depending if you want single or dual tip exhaust. Since I have a muffler only (done for about $145 at my local shop), its welded in place of the OEM system and therefore I dont have a ricey looking exhaust tip, although the deep sound is there.

The rumble is pretty loud inside the cabin from 1500-2200 rpm. Its kind of annoying at first, but you really do get used to it. Its merely an afterthought after a while. The greatest difference you will notice however, is better HIGH end acceleration. Before you get the muffler or complete catback kit, take a mental note of how long it takes you to get from 80mph to 100mph (or 60-80 if you're less daring). With the muffler in, the HIGH end acceleration is much better. Low end acceleration improvement is practically nil, because the sound you're hearing from the exhaust is throwing off your perception. It merely seems to go faster, but its all the sound you're hearing that makes you think that.

Add an AEM Brute Force intake, and the whole engine will breathe much better. I can swear I've gained at least 10 wheel horsepower from this mod alone (my first since getting my Libby).

Good luck!

Thanks for the fast replies.... I installed the Summit Racing welded muffler on the Libby, I first had the same type on my truck before I went with a complete cat back system from Magnaflow. I know ones a V8 and the other a V6 but on the truck it had a very deep and powerful rumble. My mistake for thinking a one muffler fits all kind of mentality.. Oh bye the way the Summit Racing # was 633222 it was only 37.99; now I just cant wait to get it off and install something else...

Thanks
