Post subject:  Overhead Console Install ??

Just found this nice write up on installing an Overhead Console in a Jeep.

Here's the link here....

http://earth.prohosting.com/jsalbre/evic/

There are several acronyms in the article that I'm not familiar with....

OTIS, EVIC, BCM, Premium BCM

That page is hosted by me, and has been moved. The new address should be http://alucinari.net/jeep/kj/evic_install.

OTIS = Overhead Trip Information System
EVIC = Electronic Vehicle Information Center
BCM = Body control module

The term "premium BCM" refers to the BCM that comes with KJs that have fog lights or keyless entry or steering wheel mounted radio controls. OTIS and EVICs only work with premium BCMs. That information is only current as of 2003, but it may still be the same for '04 and '05 KJs. We do know that in '04 they changed the BCM and EVICs from earlier model year KJs will not funtion properly. I'd assume that '05s are the same, but I don't know of anyone that has tried adding and EVIC to an '05.

The instructions are pretty out of date and I really need to update them. Hopefully I can get to it soon.

Roger that.

Where is the BTM located ?? What all does it control ??

Is it possible to swap-out/update the base model BTM to a Premium BTM in a model that didn't originally come with it ??

I have an 05 Renegade and would really like to try this mod. :?

Your '05 Renny doesn't have Keyless Entry?

He probably means the wireless remote on your key. That's the only form of keyless entry for the KJs as far as I know. Remote keyless entry.

As all '05s have the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) they may be different than previous years. I'm my '03 the BCM is located behind the fuse box in the driver's side end of the dash.

If you plan on adding an EVIC, I'd put together the wiring and plug it into the OBD connector to test it before you start cutting any holes in the headliner. I also wouldn't bother with any console that isn't from an '04 or '05 KJ, or some other '05 Chrysler vehicle.

Ok. Yea, my 05 does have RKE. So that means it has a Premium BCM then correct ??

How do you mean wire it together and test it in the OBD connector ??

What's different from the 04-05 KJ EVICs and the others ??

I don't know if it has the premium BCM, there may only be one BCM for '05 KJs or there may be other differences.

The instructions on that page tell how to make up a wiring harness for connecting the EVIC. Instead of splicing the wiring in though, just push the ends of each wire into the proper pin on the OBD connector.

As fore differences, we really don't know much about the '05s yet, but when the '04s came out and people started trying to install EVICs in them we found that consoles form earlier model years did not function properly.

What would the differences be ??

Do you think I could add an overhead to my CRD?
Or do they only work on the gassers. I do have a remote keyless entry.

Factory sunroof or aftermarket moonroof??? If it's the Factory Sunroof, you would need an EVIC with the Sunroof controls and pigtail.

You should be fine. I have an 04 EVIC, and have wired it up in my 05 and everything works, so I would expect the opposite would be true as well.

Well I was outbid on the '05 EVIC by ALOT!!!somebody wanted it real bad. As in 160 bucks for a part from a junk yard bad. I ended up settleing on an '04 from a grand cherokee for $30. we'll see if that works...

For anyone intrested, a group called LKQ on e-bay sells this kind of stuff all the time. Cheap too. I actually got a 2000 EVIC from them and it did not work. They refunded me on the spot and let me keep the part. Let you know how it goes.

As I understand it, the Grand Cherokee EVIC will work, except for the temperature readout.
