Post subject:  Check Engine Light

Hey guys,

I got a check engine light this morning. I ran the diag (turn on the key while pressing the trip/reset button) and after if flashed all 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's 7's, 8's, and 9's, it flashes a 6.0 and then goes back to my trip distance.

Anyone know what this means?

Also, I just passed 77K.

Thanks!
J

That's the self test for the dash console, not the way to get trouble codes.

If you want trouble codes follow this procedure:

1. Cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On within 5 seconds.

2. The odometer will show the P-code for the corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Code number.

3. If no DTC's are present, the cluster will display either:

A. "P1684" and "done"
B. Or, only "done"

P1684 does not indicate a problem; it's only a status, which indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles. "Done" indicates that no DTC's are present and the procedure is complete.

442 A leak has been detected in the evaporative system!

I have seen several people with these. Could it be the gas cap? I don't see how. I am going to take a look underneath it this afternoon. I am not going to stress about it thought.

thanks!
Jason

A loose gas cap will cause that message. It usually takes 3-5 ignition cycles for the code to clear.

try tightening that gas cap some more. Atleast 3 clicks, but I usually do like 7 or 8 just to be sure. But I also have seen a bunch of KJ's throw that code. Wonder if the gas caps are wearing out prematurely?

I had this code come up and for the longest time I could not figure it out. Eventually, it went to another code for a large leak detected. I inspected all of the hoses and found a cracked hose near the canister back near the fuel tank. Replaced hose -- No more issues. I would think that if it's not the gas cap, then you have a cracked hose like I did. Let me know if any other codes come up. When mine went to the larger leak code, I think it was P0456, it also set off a misfire in Cylinder #4 which I think may have been related because once I replaced that hose, that code has not returned either. Good Luck.

I think this is most likely the cause.

I remember the last time I was under the KJ (~2wks ago) thinking that those hoses looked a little rotted and made a mental note to mention it at my next service. They are not leaking any fluid or anything but they do appear to be in 'not so great' shape.

Thanks for the help guys!

J

Post subject:  Codes???

My check engine light came on a few days ago. I did the ignition thing and came up with a P0455. Can anyone tell me what that code means? I have 61,xxx miles on it. Thanks,Joe.

Code P0455

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description:
Evap Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected
Leak has been detected in the evaporation system.

Resolution:
From Chuck Robbins:
Basically the evaporation system is a containment system for fuel fumes. The most common cause for this code (If memory serves me correct) is a faulty gas cap.

From Bob Smith:
If everything else checks out, and you still get this code with the gas cap tight, check the O-ring (seal) on the cap. It may have dryrotted or otherwise be damaged

From Bob Tom:
I would check the electrical connection and the condition of the connector at the evap. purge solenoid (driver's side bolted to the firewall) just to make sure that solenoid can function as it should (won't help if solenoid is plugged or bad though). The PCM controls the ground side of this solenoid (it is normally open). When energized by the PCM, the vent solenoid will close, sealing off the fresh air side of the system. The PCM only does this when it is running its evap monitor (self-test).

There's a problem with the hoses near the fuel tank dry rotting and cracking really quickly. It's a fairly common problem even though the dealership will swear to you they've never seen it before.

I just went thru this rigamaroo this afternoon. Got the SAME Code P0455.

My wife just installed (2 days ago) a new aftermarket locking gas cap. Put the original one back on then got the Code read and deleted by the local parts monkey at Advance Auto Parts.
