Where did this guy come from? I saw him on an episode of Popeye the other day and was thinking that animal/ whatever it is looks familiar.

That's Eugene the Jeep! He's one of the possible origins of the Jeep name.

Eugene could fly and go through walls (basically he could go anywhere, like a Jeep.)

And he could trick popeye and lock him out of his own house. I couldn't remember it's name so thanks for that part, I didn't know that he had superpowers. I think I am going to have to waste company time and search the internet for the creation of Eugene.

I've read a number of places that the other possible name ("GP" for General Purpose) was a load of hooey as the military had marked the vehicle as having specific purposes and so was never referred to as a general purpose vehicle when first ordered. Orders that came later had a designation from Willys as "GPW".

It seems that if the character of Eugene the Jeep was around before the Willys vehicle and Eugene bounced around and could go anywhere while saying "Jeep Jeep Jeep" and THEN a little buggy that bounced around and went anywhere appears and is referred to as a Jeep........

I know this is probably the deadest of horses but the "GP" thing has always sounded silly in light of the cartoon character being around before the vehicle. Perhaps there was some legal doodoo that kept Willys from being more forthcoming?

If the color is right on the stuffed animal...Looks like he might be the origin for the "Smiley Face" too

Speaking of smiley face ... Clint has a smiley doll on his dashboard. Clint, mind telling us how you got a hold of that? Curious mind wants to know. I like to collect smiley goodies.

I grew up watching Popeye all of the time. My favorite is the Ali Baba where Popeye tries to get into the Arabs cave and he says "Open Sayz me." He then fights all of the 40 thieves.

The old B&W episodes are the best. Eugene was cool.

By the way. Going off topic since we are discussing dolls. I got a chance to spot LilMatty's hitchhiker. He was a little Intel lab guy and he got stuck in his front grill/bumper area. The poor little guy got drenched in the stream crossings.

Some Eugene Jeep history
This is kinda cool and gives some background. Did you know that there is a school called The Fighting Jeeps?

Yes it was.

Btw; I never realized "Jeep" is civilian... while "jeep" is military.

Make Eugene the LOST mascot! Do it, do it! Think about it, Eugene was 4th dimensional. Liberties are multi-dimensional, especially when compared to the Wrangler. Liberties are cute and cuddly, until you put them in a dangerous situation. Then they reveal their less obvious abilities that enable them to get gnarly, lol...

I dont think you can. He is a registered TM of the Hearst corporation. I have 2 stuffed Jeeps from Universal Studios. His tag says
Name - Jeep
DOB - 1936
The magical, orchid eating critter from Jeep Island who vanishes at will.

1999 King Features Syndicate, Inc. (TM) The hearts Corporation.

They are incorrect...His name is not Jeep. That is his race/breed. His name is Eugene.
