Post subject:  LEAKY ROOF

I have an 05 liberty I purchased last year brandy new it has satellite radio as well. I noticed back in Sept of this year. that it had a leak only because it rained the night before and the next morning I was loading up luggage in the back. In the course of loading up my luggage, my hand came in contact with the carpet in the cargo area and I noticed it was wet. I looked up and saw a small wet spot on the head liner in the back above the 1/2 glass on the passenger side. When I touched it, it was like squeezing a sponge, water came pouring out. I took it to the dealer and they promised me that they fixed it. Stupid me I took their word for it. It rained on friday this past week and on sunday I noticed that it smelled a little funky. The glass in the cargo compartment looked to have condensation on it and there was minor condensation on the front windshield. I checked it out and found that the headliner was wet in the same spot it was before. Now I am very concerened about driving around a vehicle laced with mold. I have made an appointment to take it back to the dealer tomorrow and I am going to askt that they replace the headliner and the carpet in the back. Would that be asking too much? I only have 15,300 miles on it. What are my options?

Thanks,
Shawn

Take in the bill/repair sheet that they printed for your records the first time you took it in and tell them to FOR REAL do the work since it is leaking again in the very same spot as before and now because of that leaking has caused other damages...headliner and carpet...they should do everything free, especially since it is under warranty too I would think...BEST OF LUCK

Aaaah .... the sweet stench of mold. Beats a Katrina fridge but it's still pretty nasty. Good luck getting it fixed.

The dealer and/or DC has to do something here, priority as it could be a huge health risk to you and your family. I doubt based on that alone or from the HUGE faux pas they did by missing this fix the first time, you will have little trouble getting this dealt with quickly. IF not call your cable news comsumer watch :D That should get you some decent compensation. Shouldn't have to get that far though.

Good luck!

Is the satellite radio the source of the leak? And I hope you get it all fixed, I would hate for your experience with Jeep to be spoiled by one vehicle.

Post subject:  UPDATE

I took it in yesterday and told them they needed to replace the floor in the cargo area. They were a little snobby at first. I did not think they were going to do it or find some way out of not doing it. They also offered to do the recall work while I had it there, which was a relief since I was wondering how long before I got a letter.

I called last evening to check on whether it was ready. They told me they had to replace the flooring in the cargo area. THe headliner was fine they said. They also called in their "glass man" and because they "usually end up breaking the glass when they go to reseal", they had to order a new glass. They also found that the "weatherstripping around the back door was a bit on the short side". So they are replacing weatherstripping, rear side glass and reseal, and flooring. The glass and flooring are on order and should get in today. I hope I will get her back today.
We'll see how accurate they are this time around. I will make sure to leave the vehicle outside for the next few weeks to see if I can catch some rain. The last time they repaired, I used a hose and it did not leak, then it rained and it leaked, so I will not try hose again.

Thanks, All.

I'd still try the hose anyway....just to make sure it hasn't gotten worse since being at the dealer...

I'll ask because I didn't see it posted anywhere: Do you have a sunroof? If you do and it came from the factory there are drain tubes that run down the A-pillar and at the back near the popper glass. If that tube were not connected properly or punctured it could cause your leak. Also, if you remove the 3rd brake light housing you can look right into the pocket between the headliner and roof to see if there are any holes....

However, I doubt that my suggestions are really the problem since the dealership is going through all the trouble to try and fix your issue. Good luck

I do have a sun roof. I will try and hose down anyway. I still don't have my vehicle. They are still awaiting rug for the back. Apparently they replaced back side glass and some other seals. I hope I'll have it back today. Got a nissan sentra for a rental and don't like it one bit.

You won't believe this.

We have a 2005 Jeep Liberty with sunroof. We have had it into the dealer 7 times to fix the same leak you describe. They have reinstalled the side rear windows. They have remove, recaulked and reinstalled the roof racks (twice). Still leaking. Finally, the dealer gave up and offered us a new Jeep Liberty. My wife picked it up late yesterday, drove it home and parked it. Of course it rained last night and believe it or not, the new one leaks in the same place. But this one leaks on both sides.

Did you ever find a reason because we are all stumped.

That is quite funny. I have not yet been given a cause by the dealer. I think that is probably part of the reason why they still have my vehicle. I know that if they don't get it right this time, I will be writing to Chrysler.
