extended warranty for the KJ? Any suggestions on what to buy? Any one part better than the other?

As close to Bumper to bumper you can..........and get everything spelled out in writing. There are so many randomthings that go wrong, buy a new GM truck W the new 100,000 mile warenty from the factory.

I had partial coverage (up to 50K miles) on my liberty and was happy knowing that the major portions of the Jeep were covered even if I didn't use it.

In 4 years of ownership, I have been to the dealership 3 times for issues:

listen as they occured (oldest to newest)

1) Full Time 4wd inicator light in cluster went out. Cluster replaced under 3/36 warranty around 18K miles back in 2003
2) Driver Seat heater quit working. Replaced (not under warranty) last February? 2006 for a resonable cost
3) LBJ recall the October.

Other than that, it's been 52K miles of trouble free ownership. I look forward to another 52K and no car payments!

Extended warranties are never a good deal, like any other insurance. If they were a good deal all the insurance companies would be broke. Most people will spend more on extented warranties(insurance) than they will save.

Unless your tranny self destructs after the warranty is out

With the known failure of egr's and TC, tranny pump, and eventually the whole tranny, I am happy I got one for ours. We bought ours at the time of purchase (of course you bought it when you bought it stupid),

I mean we bought the warranty at the same time we bought the jeep brand new, that is probably when you have the possibilty of getting a halfway decent deal, so if you are going to do it, the sooner the better I say.

Whatever you decide to get make sure it is a factory service contract. If it's Chevy get what Chevy sells, if it's Jeep get a Mopar. That is the best advice I can give. I've delt with alot of them and Mopar is about the best.

i got the 8yr 80,000 5 star warrenty with my '03, but even that is only the remainder of 8 or 80k so i have a 3000 or 90 day BTB warrenty and a 5yr/47,301 mile warrenty remaining.

but anything that is for the term of the payments would be best if you can get close to BTB

Get gap insurance if you can. Extended warrinites have deductibles, and gap insurance covers those deductibles, if the kj is totaled, lose income and the like.

My first Jeep, an 06 KJ 4x4 Sport, inferno red, Command Trac, Stock+;

This is dependent on vehicle, how long one expects to keep it, and the price of the extended warranty. The example I would use is the CRD. If you plan on keeping a CRD past 3 yrs/36K miles, you would be best to get some extended protection. The price I paid for the 7yr/100K mile, 0-deductible, b2b extended warranty was less than an EGR replacement.

Thats a good point, I plan on keeping the CRD for as long as it will go, so I went for the extended warranty, if you are a person that trades in every 2-3 years then it wouldnt make much sense to get one.

Don't waste your money. There is a deductible and they often times will fight you tooth and nail over what is actually covered.If you are unfortunate enough to need a large repair after the warranty is expired, it hopefully will be able to be fixed for under what the extended warranty cost would have been to begin with. Also, and don't shoot me for this, buy a gas model. The diesel was just too short lived and you know parts are going to be as expensive as as say a volvo or audi down the line. They will be scarce.....although the diesel is an awesome vehicle. Also, if you don't drive in a lot of stop and go, buy the manual. Not only will you save $800, but it will not give you any problems either.....no often $300 flushes, possible problems or even failure. But you will eventually need a new clutch years and years down the line...
Sorry diesel owners, but you were an "experiment" and that sucks...good luck to you though..awesome vehicle...
Therefore, in conclusion, save your money on the extended warranty...they are a rip off. Do all severe maintenance religiously, and you are looking at 150,000 miles plus....Good luck.
P.S. If you do get an extended warranty, credit unions offer great value on theirs, and you can purchase any time..

I hate to say it but go to a stealership and buy it. You then have the ablility to cancel and get a prorate back on most extended warranties.
