Post subject:  High lift jack questions.
I have not found in one place the questions I have for this. but if there is a post for that I missed, forgive me and point me to the right place.

1) I have looked at the high lift jack (HLJ) and see that it has a small tounge (for lack of a better word for it). I can't see how it would life the KJ. where do you place it to lift the KJ?

2) I know I have to buy the extra stand for it (that big orange square thing), I read somewhere that getting it gives better footing. Is there anything else I need to buy with it. this question maybe realted to number one.

3) I don't have a rack at the moment, but I think I have read somewhere that one can put it under the back seats? Where can one put the jack if one does not have a rack. How does it go under the back seats.

I guess, just by looking at it, I can see how to attche it to the KJ (I am not lifted yet) and where I can store it. It will be a while before I will get a rack, other things are needed first. I guess I am having visualation problems, not to mention spelling!

As for actual usage of the jack to lift the KJ....I would think with the larger base and if you had rock rails or something of the sort you'd be able to lift it appropriately....anyone else??

I used to U-Bolt it to the top of my KJ on the Renegade roof basket. I recently sold the Renegade Roof basket and replaced it with a Surco Safari Basket. With the Surco basket, I also bought the hi-lift mount.

I suppose you could U-Bolt it along the roof rails going across the top of the KJ.

My high lift is a 60" so it wont fit under the seat. There is a tire strap that can be bought to lift from the tire. The strap has hooks that go in the spokes of the rim and lifts from the tire. Other lift points can be from a towing hitch or boulder bars.

High lift Jacks are great tools for Jeeps with rock rails or steel bumpers with proper Jacking points, or for Jacking out of a tight spot like a winch, but the uses are very limited with a stock KJ. The wheel strap mentioned above is great for getting blocks under the unit but you need to take care not to dent the side of the vehicle. If you have a stock KJ you are better off with the scissor jack or a bottle jack and a short length of 2x6 or 2x8.

So, the jack is not really for changing a tire, but an aid to geting unstuck. In either case, I need to install rock rails and hitch or other type of points to actually be useful for the KJ.

I designed this doohicky for use without rock rails. It works like a charm if you can get one fab'd for you. Look for Libby's post in there as well for a real nice finished version, too.

Hey Todd

Nice fab work on thet Hi-lift extention. Im going to make one as well. I wonder how much it brings the max load down from 7000lbs. Keep up the fabbing man. KjHawaii

You can use it to change a tire, but I'd definitely use it as a last resort type of thing. I've used one to help free a truck, and they're pretty scary when they've got a load on 'em. Very easy to get hurt if you aren't careful.

And for a recap... :wink:

1&2) The small tongue is great for flat rock rails. Those items they talked about from the fabrication section are great ideas and would help you out also. Hi-Lift does make their bumper lifter attachment and the other attachement that lifts the Jeep up by the tire. Great if you don't have a bumper or rails. It's handy for getting the tire higher to stuff things in the hole you may be stuck in. For changing a tire you'd need jacks too. You also could insert the Hi-Lift into the receiver hitch but it may be scary and dangerous. (I guess that could apply to using the jack at all)

3) Just take the base off the 48" jack (be sure to not loose the cotterpin) and it fits great under the backseat. Nice way to keep it secure for free. The chair brackets keep it from going forward in the case of an extreme stop and the doors keep it from going left or right.

Like they said, a bottle jack can work great for you also and if you do need to use the Hi-Lift, definately open the doors first so you don't dent them and pay attention as you're using it to make sure you don't put yourself or others in an unsafe situation.
