Post subject:  Good Roof Racks And Where To Get Them
Whats everyones opinions on the best roof racks for the KJ? It absolutely must have a way to securely mount the spare tire as I want to relocate it. Also, what would be a reliable distributor for them? I still am not very trusting of eBay.

There is a post under roof baskets that has a lot of info on it i posted alot of pics of my out back roof rack there. Id say if you are looking for a rack that you can really load then this is the one for you. The info on were to get them in the States is all there.

Got mine from this guy - on E-bay - and love it. He makes them to your specs, and is located in AZ. Would not think twice about getting another one from him. I'm using U-bolts to mount to the stock rails. You could also weld feet to it to mount directly to the roof.

Wow. That's an impressive system. I thought I'd go with that one until I saw the price.....$950 :o
Oh and FreeJeep, even though thats EBay, I'm seriously considering that one. $250 for a custom isnt bad. I also noticed he's in AZ, so I might even be able to just go pick it up.

5 MTR's on Moab wheels is approx 70lb per wheel for 350lbs... holy mac.

That is a serious rack. Don, do you remember the measurements on yours or was it a 'standard' size you ordered?

I curious why you didn't extend it to the front closer to your windshield... no sunroof right?

Did you buy his U bolts or your own? What paint? Just tremclad stuff?

Go to etrailer.com and look over the Rola basket. I bought one with the extension for under $200 bucks. Welded feet to it so it mounts directly where the roof rails went. Has been great. Also, I used the discount code acuramdx.org for a 10 percent discount.

The rack is 45x60 with the front light bar option. Bought it a couple years ago, so not sure how much I paid. I picked up the U-bolts from Home depot, under $10 for the 4. I would highly suggest coating the rack with Line-X, or something similar if you live in a wet / snowy state. Paint tends to get scraped off while loading / unloading big stuff, creating a perfect situation for rust. I've repainted mine multiple times for that reason.

I mounted it toward the back of the Jeep for easy access. The bumper and spare tire make a good stairway.

If you order it from the dude in AZ, keep it in mind to get the legs made taller if you want to continue using your sunroof. Great rack by the way.

I just emailed the AZ place asking questions on his stuff and he just sent out some generic email to all enquiries stating:

"My email settings off my website have apparently been screwed up for quite sometime (thanks webmaster $%#%$). Please accept my apologies, I was not ignoring you. Let me know if I can still be of any service to you and thanks for the interest!"

Yet he doesn't have a phone number listed on his site and still ignored all the questions I had for him :roll: :roll:

Any other good rack sources?

I have a custom made roof rack made by another member of lost. It's Rhino Lined and bolts to the factory holes where the roof rails were.

Whatever rack, you get, remember if it mounts to the factory rails, they are only rated between 150 and 200 lbs, so regardless of what your rack will handle, remember the mounting system.

I broke my factory rails where they mount to the roof, and all I had on the rack was the spare tire, 4 PIAA lights, and a CB antenna.... No I did not roll or hit a tree, just climbing an obstackle, and the plastic flew off!

Line-X is a pickup bedliner hot spray polyurethane, you get it at the Line-X stores all over. You can also use Rhino Liner and any of the others.

Bill, I got my rack from the EBay guy 'Blackout.' He up in Flagstaff. I really like my rack. Used his standard size but had the height cut down to 4.5" so it'd fit in my garage. Paid $300 plus shipping and it's been a workhorse.

Had it powder coated locally but in hindsight should have just painted it.

It's like he said, it's strong as all get out and light as a feather.

For the cross rack I got some tubing and cut all the pieces required, then found a welder to do do the job.

You've seen my rack. Just look at some of the Moab pics of my rig.

From what I've heard, Line-X s the most durable of the commercial spray on bed liners. I'm gona get my RL bumpers Line-X'd. If I like it, will probably do my fender flairs, sliders, etc. Only plus for some of the competitors is the color options available.

Check out Durabak, it can be sprayed on with the right equipment, and comes in many colors, they use the stuff to coat the decks and stairs on ships, it is tough. People have used it to coat their entire vehicles, looks nice actually.
