Post subject:  Clearing OBD codes?

I was changing my spark plugs today and after firing it up I got a OBD-II code 2317; turns out the connector for the coil pack on cylinder 6 wasn't all the way on

I fixed it and it's running fine but the engine light is still on. Is there a way to clear it without a scanner or taking it to the stealership? Will the dealer charge to clear it, and if so how much?

Thanks guys.

You can try disconnecting the battery but when I changed an O2 sensor for my son's honda the only way to clear the code was with a scanner,I bought one from pep boys for 50 bucks-well worth the price,I already used it 3 times the past year...

If that solved the problem it will clear itself after a few drive cycles.

you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes, but DO NOT do it if you have to go for emissions soon, cuz they'll know. in that case just try to find somebody with a scanner.

For free?

If not disconnecting isn't a problem as we don't get emissions tests in KS.

most if not all 96 and newer vehicles don't get put on the dyno for emissions testing. they just plug their computer into the OBD-II port to see if all the sensors are reading right, and they also look to see if the light has been recently reset.

since they don't run on the dino, you could theoretically have a check engine light and be failing. so they have to make sure you didn't just pull over at the corner and reset the light before you come in for testing. i know a bunch of people that had their check engine light reset legitimately shortly before getting tested, and were instantly failed. the only way to pass after that is to get a certain amount of engine starts and complete running cycles back into the computer before they accept it.
