Post subject: | Mobil 1 Extended Life Formula |
I recently tried this new formula with the corresponding M1 Extended Life filter. First run was 13,000 miles before change. I was about 1 quart short when I drained it. KJ mileage was around 128k. Possible that the KJ was "shocked" by the unusually long interval between changes, whereas I used to do it every 4-6k with the standard Mobil 1 formula. Anyone else had this trouble? *Note this wasn't a leak, everything is dry suggesting the missing quart was burned over time... I'm trying the EL formula again, but monitoring the level every thousand miles over 5k this time. |

Could be burning alittle oil. A quart every 13k sounds reasonable for that mileage.. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It didn't occur to me to change the filter halfway. I assumed (first mistake) that since the filter was also labeled "Extended Life" it would stand the 15k durability boasted by the EL syn formula. The whole point of this experiment was to get at least double, if not triple, the mileage out of an oil cycle for only $0.20 extra per quart and another buck or two for the filter. The money saved for someone who drives 30-40k per year would have been awesome. If I can get 10k out of it without losing any oil, that would still be a good deal... Got about 2k on this cycle, so we'll find out shortly. |

I spent around $42 for 5 quarts of Mobil 1 EL and the matching EL filter at Advanced Auto. I used to get regular Mobil 1 & filter for around $38, but haven't checked it lately. |

Wow, thats ALOT. I get 5quarts of 10w-30 mobil1 SYN for $20 at walmart and a Pure-one Purolator at Advance for around $6-7.. I would change it every 10k and change the filter every 5k.. Ill just change mine every 3k. It takes me around 6months to get that much and I like the 70k warranty.. |

Would you (or anyone) spend another $20, with the products shipped to your door, to get up to another 10,000 miles out of an oil change with Better protection of your engine in the process? That extra $20 would also get you other superior products (gear oil, trans oil, greases, filters, etc.) at dealer cost for a 6 month period. What if doing that also helped to support the lost forums and events? |

Get a oil analysis done if you want to be sure. Engines vary on how hard they are on oil. So I don't like those oils that make blanket statements about really long drain intervals. I've read quite a few oil analysises and I've seen certain vehichles that wear out fully synthetics in 5,000 miles. I've also seen vehicles (subaru flat-4s) that are VERY easy on oil and can go 7,500 on cheap $0.99/quart dino oil. Burning a quart of oil over 15,000 miles in a vehicle with 128,000 miles on it is not that troubling to me. If you were on 3K drain intervals that would only equate to losing 1/5th of a quart per oil change. I probably lose that much in my '03 with 38K on it with 3K drain intervals. |

I think the tranny takes 12 quarts with a full flush doesnt it? ![]() ![]() |

The $60 figure would be for 5 Qts and the Ea series filter & Also includes the 6 month Preferred Customer membership which gets all your other purchases at cost. I would also consider doing a oil analysis after 10-15k miles to see how it is working. Like most analysis done on Amsoil oils, you will probably find everything to be Ok and then not much reason to do them after that. It would also only be worth while if you had something to compare to such as doing the first analysis with your current oil, then After the 2nd change w/ Amsoil as the first change will be cleaning up the regular oils mess. If I was running a by-pass filter system too and shooting for much longer change intervals then I would do oil analysis more often. Trans oil runs $9 retail a Qt. but cheaper from me. You don't Have to flush the trans, you can go for the full fill on the trans with a flush or just do a normal service. While it is better to do the full system, most people don't. I could go on about Amsoil Vs. Mobil 1 but I will instead offer a link to some reading about the recent addition of Mobil's "Extended Perfotmance" oil. ExxonMobil Follows AMSOIL into Extended Drain Market It does get tough to compete when people are seeing the competitions commercials all the time and hearing them claim to be "The best". I wish Amsoil would run more advertising for their products and make the claims that others make, at least they will show the data to prove it. Amsoil continually shows comparisons of its products Vs. the others (and wins those comparisons) but I have yet to see another company compare themselves to Amsoil. If Amsoil wasn't better do you think those companies big lawyers would stand for that false advertising? No way. That must mean they know they are still following the leader then. Amsoil was 1st in 1972 and the rest are just playing catch-up. |

Ohh, well, I thought you had to flush the tranny and you couldnt mix mopars ATF +4 and the Amsoil? ![]() Edit: Found a website with some very good info on Amsoil. Not that you need it JJSKJ, but its some good stuff to read for others. It does state that you do not need a flush to add Amsoil to the tranny.. ![]() ![]() http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx |

What I'm having trouble understanding is the idea of going as long as you can on an oil change. I may be a newby on this forum and new to Jeep ownership however, I have owned and operated lots of trucks and heavy (logging) equipment and I'm not new to lubrication. I will switch to synthetic when I hit the 1000 mile mark on the KJ. I'm not changing to synthetic so that I don't have to change oil so often, I'm doing it because I believe it's the best protection for my Liberty. I will change the oil every 2500 miles (3000 if I decide in Amsoil, JJsKJ ![]() |

That's kinda how I am. I run Mobil 1 syn regularly and still do the oil change at 3000 miles. May be overkill, may be anal, but that's just me. It's the least I could do for it, since I'm driving the poor thing 44.5 miles each way to work every day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
