Post subject:  50,000 mile maintenace schedule

Just about to hit 50,000 and I'm working on a list of things to check and have done for maintenance. The last two times I got my oil changed (quick lube place) they are trying to sell me on a "4 wheel drive system service" for $80 but I can find any specific information on this (I think it's a flush and fill). Does anyone know what it requires and if it is something I should do or are they just trying to sell me on something I dont need?


I bought it used about a year and a half ago and I'm not 100% sure what the previous owner has and has not done. So I'm not sure what else I should have checked.


Daily driver used for very light offroading. Nothing extreme.

If you have not had it done yet, I would suggest getting the transfer case fluid changed. It is a real easy job and only takes a couple Qts of ATF to do the job. No way is it worth $80 though. If the trans fluid & filter hasn't been changed, I would do that too. You should also get the diffs serviced. That too is an easy job only requiring 4 Qts or gear lube and about an hour to do yourself. Do a test on the coolant to see how it is holding up, you should be able to find a tester at a parts store. Since you don't know what the previous owner did, I would do all the normal fluid services so you at least have a baseline and know what has been done. Use some good quality synthetics and you will be good to go for a while.

I just took mine in because of a cracked radiator. While in the shop they also took a look at the cv's and they ended up tightening up the clamps on the CV boots. My Lib has 80,000 on it and wheel it lightly...atleast right now. If you do the fluids yourself...dont forget to check the CVs, because even if you do light wheeling I'm sure something is bound to loosen up.

Really at 50,000 miles you shouldn't need to do the fluids in the TC, FD and RD [Transfer Case, Front Diff & Rear Diff] if, and only if you have been following the recommendations listed in the owners manual. IIRC the major service interval is 60,000 miles. Of course, that doesn't take into account the chance you bought the Jeep with a few miles on it and have just shifted the service schedule to accomidate.

Common items would be:

Replace Spark Plugs
Drain / Fill Transmisison Fluid & replace filters
Drain / Fill TC, FD, RD
Change Oil
Change Filter (Air)
Check the brakes & clean drums if you have an '02
Inspect suspension pieces

The coolant isn't listed, but after 4 years of service the coolant in my Jeep will be replaced before this winter begins.

isn't the coolant in our jeeps the special long life synthetic version?

Yes, it is a long life coolant.

It "should" be able to go unreplaced throughout the entire life of the Liberty. But I just don't know how much degredation I want to risk after 4 great years of service with my Jeep. I haven't had any problems, but in the summer it is hot and humid and in the winter it gets bitter cold so I would like to 'refresh the fluid as precautionary step to ease my mind.

You can buy test strips to check the coolant. My customers will soon be receiving them from me. Opps...did I let out another surprise? :?

Thanks guys, when I get home I will write up a list of things to have checked. My old mechanic told me a majority of the stuff (including spark plugs) dont need to be changed until 60-65,000 in the 2002's. I didnt know how true that was but I didnt want to go to a new place and get ripped off.

Its not true.. Spark plugs usually need to be changed around 30-40k.. :wink:

I might have misunderstood him, they may have been changed and not be due for a while or something.

Seeing as I bought it used, I'm not 100% sure what has been done and what hasnt been done. So I brought it to my mechanic and went off of what he said which he thought everything was in good shape and I was fine until about 60,000 or so.

Was thinking about bringing it in to "winterize" it because I need a alignment and rebalance anyway. Just wasnt sure what needed to be done and what was fluff.
