 Post subject: Weird sound over bumps

Well, starting tonight on my way home from work i went over a bump (crack in the road that grown over the years) after that every little bump, pebble, and even turn to the left this just weird noise comes.

It sounds like its coming from the front passenger side, i'm think its either possibly my ball joint about to die or my struts about finished as well. I dont beleive its coming from the back.

She's going to Jeep tomorrow to get the recall done so they are gonna have to look at it.

If its the strut on the way out the lift is coming sooner then antisipated :)

Year, miles, temp outside? Cant help you without that info. Balljoints usually make a clanking noise. Could be some bushings? Sway bar? Control arm bushings? :wink:

03 freedom edition, about 65K and the temp was about 50ish outside.

got the idea it might be my lug nuts, checked them, tight as could be.

Might be a worn bushing, i'll have jeep look at it in the morning.

If you still have the sound after the recall is done get a can of silicone lubricant and hit all the bushings in the front end - sway bar bushings under the front bumper, the ones where the sway bar connects to the lower control arm, and the bushings on the upper control arms (you can get those thru the front wheel wells). That should take care of it. I noticed this starting to happen after I put my lift on, but judicious application of silicone lube took care of it.

well, things went from bad to worse this morning.

luckly i was about 100 yards from the dealer at the time.

Front passenger wheel completly locked up. All i know is its not good, i'll update when the dealer calls.

Sounds like a brake issue now....unless by wheel locking up you mean the lbj failed??

might be a brake issue, i'm hoping not though. Brakes are fairly new only maybe 10k on em if that. Didnt seem like a brake issue through when driving it, it didnt sound like rubbing like the brake was stuck, it sounded like a clunking of metal on metal.

Did the KJ drop down and then lock up? Or was it still at it's normal ride height and locked up...and by lock up do you mean the wheel refused to move? If that is the case maybe you have a CV axle issue perhaps? But then again it could still just be a brake issue, did you do the work yourself or did a shop do it? Or is it still factory equipment, if so I've heard of factory equipment locking up b4, Adamisadam had that issue (hadn't seen him on the board for a while though??)

After re-reading the description you gave on the noise and when it would occur I'm inclined to think it might have been a CV joint. I kind of doubt it is the brakes although I suppose thats possible. Guess we'll find out for sure when you get the word from the dealer. Hopefully it is the CV since it would be covered under the 7/70 drivetrain warranty. Good luck!

I should probably know this, but I don't. Do our hubs unlock when we are in 2WD? If he was in 2WD would a CV, or front diff failure caused the wheel to lock up?

Im going to guess its the wheel bearings. Thats a bad case if they lock up though.. should be a fairly cheap fix if it is the bearings. 8)

welp, dealer called. Aparently, when i did my front brakes, i managed to snap one of the bolts that holds my caliper onto my rotor. Over time and my numerous trips to maine at 90MPH it managed to wiggle itself loose. The noise i was hearing was my caliper rattling.

My wheel locked up becuase my caliper wedged itself between the rotor and my rim.

Aside from a few gouges on the back of my rim, and a couple scratchs in my rotor, it just needs a new bolt. Seems a bit fishy to me but whatever, dealer said it wont cost me anything.

I have a feeling it was my balljoints biting the bullet

They were also nice enough to inform me that they will do the recall on my rear swing gate handle while i was there (my buddy is a mechanic so this is the first time they've seen the jeep since i drove it off the lot) i never did it because i figured why change a good thing and to leave well enough alone....oh well


On a lighter note, my engine skid arrived at the dealers today, they wanted $25 to install it, i think i'll do it myself as $25 is half of my tranny plate :)

Glad you got it all worked out, for now. Cool to hear it won't cost anything but the gas there and back. I'd ask to see the old bolt too if they said it actually broke too, just to make sure they are replacing something.

Looks like RockyMtEditionKJ was on the right track to begin with. I doubt it was your LBJ as that would involve the wheel flopping up into the wheel well and should have been readily apparent when you got out to look at it. Have your buddy check it over if your concerned, but at least it isn't costing you anything except time.

doesnt apply to you, i beleive it was on 02-04 models there were instances of a faulty rear swing gate switch. The switch would get wet and automatically open the rear glass while driving.

I have an 02 when I enter my VIN it never gave me anyting about this recall, only the LBJ?

I had it done on my 04. I believe it was only the 04's.. :wink:
