Post subject:  Caliper bolt part number (bad dealer story)

Well, after reading over my work order from earlier in the day, i noticed more writing, stating "caliper bolt was replaced with a substitude to get by, should not be used long term, should contact parts dept for proper bolt, and then service dept for installation prices"

Wow, i'd like to thank my dealer for being a horrible place. They had my jeep from 8am to 6pm today doing my ball joint recall, the swing gate switch recall and to check on the clunk (previous thread).

They basically told me, since i didnt have them do the brakes, it wasnt there problem, they gave me a substitude to get me by, they didnt even make the effort of looking up the part number for me and actually getting it.

So i'm assuming, they want me to call there parts dept, be put on hold for a long time while the guy looks up the part number, wait 2 weeks for them to get it (seems to be the average time for them to get anything) and then pay labor for them to put a bolt on. Mind you they already had my front end apart doing my ball joint recall....

Its one of the bolts on the back of the caliper that tightens it to the rotor to keep it in place

(bolt pictured in the 5th picture down with circles around it)

My question being, if the bolt i think the right one to order, the correct one?

First bolt on the page...or possibly the 3rd?

Now i remember why i never went back to them for anything...

Have you tried calling another dealer? The brakes are really nothing to mess around with. If that caliper comes off at higher speeds, you could get into some series trouble.. As bad as you hate to, I would call another dealer or even that one and try to get the right bolt..

I screwed the threads up on a upper balljoint nut and was surprised when my local dealer had some in stock.. Was only a couple bucks a piece too.. :D

I'll check my service manual when i get home and see if there is a part # listed...that is bogus to see they jerry-rigged your KJ...if it were to fail b4 you can get it properly fixed they would have a huge lawsuit on their hands I would think....BUT, have you taken your wheel off to look andsee if they actually did this "jerry-rigging"??? Maybe they actually replaced but are telling you they didn't so you'll be nervous and actually come in there and have the work done twice....just some thoughts....

Bolting up calipers is easy, you can do that. Letting a vehicle out of the service dept with the brakes comprimised is really irresponsible.

I wonder what happened to the original bolt?? Did they snap it off? If so you'd think they'd be able to get another easy. I'd be concerned they stripped out the threads where the caliper mounts and did some cobbling to get the caliper mounted in which case there is some work to do to get it right.

I hope it's nothing but dealerships can be awful at accepting responsibility for damaging your vehicle. They should have fixed it right the first time, instead they got you to sign off on the half stupid job and want you to pay for the proper repair. Good luck, like I said I hope it is very minor but if it isn't they will fight you all they way over fixing it. Been there before a few times.

Apparently, the previous bolt i managed to "snap". I had heard a clunking sound which turned out to be my caliper being loose and hitting my rotor (other thread explains it)

Making a long story short, i'm not so upset about the fact that they wouldn't take responcibility for it as i admit i did my own brakes (midas wanted $800, they want 775!!!) but i'm not strong enough in any means to snap a bolt and if i did i'm pretty sure i'd know it. Its the fact that they couldn't take the time to get me the proper bolt and get the job done right.

They want me to call the parts dept, order the bolt, and then schedule an appt. to have it installed...My ball joint recall took them 9 hours to do...they quoted me 2 on the phone...when i got there there wasnt a single other car there being worked on or any in line...what happened to my other 7 hours. Not to mention the day i had to take off from work, and they want me now to take another day off and give them my car again, pay for labor on installing something they easily had access to and wouldn't have taken anyone with half a brain more then 5 minutes to change (including the coffee and cigarette break you know he would've taken)

I feel a letter to DC coming on.

if they spent just 9 hours working on your LBJs then they wasted your time....the service tech showed me the schedule for the LBJ recall and it states a 2 hour MAX labor time for the replacement....mine were replaced in an hour and a half....

Just for info, on my 06 it's a threaded caliper pin and they come as a set of two, apparently with new sleeves and boots. If I had the year or VIN on yours I could look it up and give you a definite part number on the ones for your KJ.

swing gate recall doesnt apply to you with your 05. i beleive it was 02-04 models, they recalled the mechanism in the swing gate handle because there were instanced where it would leak and water would cause the rear glass to open while driving.
