My gas cap went bad on my 2003 Liberty, the check engine light kept coming on. Went to autozone they checked the code, picked up a new cap for $8.99. Has this happened to anyone else? I never had a cap go bad on any car I have ever owned....Rich

I have only had it happen on older vehicles, including my XJ.

My ford ranger had that happen - although at the time, we didn't have autozone pulling codes for free...that new gas cap cost me over $100. Fairly common I think...

Having bought our KJ from AAFES in Germany, a locking gas cap was the 1st thing we bought for our Libby. Traveling to Eastern Euro countries, and even some places in Western Europe, we wanted to keep OUR gas where it belongs!

We just bought a generic (or, one for a Grand Cherokee?) Stant and has been a non-issue ever since.

I had a few Olds Cutlass Cieras and Supremes over the year before I had my KJ and they all had gas caps go bad after they were up in miles (The 96 Olds went bad at about 50K tho). I was told by a non dealer mechanic that it had something to do with the fact that the fuel systems and the exhaust gas recovery systems running at higher pressures that kill the caps. You never saw check engine lights for gas caps "back in the day", now that happens quite often.

I've had that problem with every newer jeep I've owned, a simple fix but a pain in the butt.

The gas cap is only one of the problems that cause that code, the is also a small rubber hose attached to the fill neck underneath that I think goes to a filter. If it's off or has a crack it it you'll get a code, and a few other things I'm sure. Having a CRD mine is different, so I have no firsthand knowledge. Did Autozone test the cap before they sold you the new one?
