Post subject:  Custom Basket Depth

I know this is more of a Fab section question, but I figured that I would get more looks here.

What do you think is an optimal basket depth? I am looking at making my own, and was thinking in the range of 4" to keep a low profile.

Let the comments fly, ....please

I am at a toss up here. I want one that is low profile that will come to the same height as my Yakima Cross bars BUT it looks way cooler sitting on top of them. 4" is about right, right?

The roof bars are coming off, and the basket will mount to the roof rail mounts, and have a bottom to the basket much like the MegaWarrior (I have this now). I want to make my own for more light tabs, antenna tabs, and just an overall lower profile in general

The one that I am fabbing up started at 3 inches but I think will go to 4 just for overall looks, if that helps any.

Don't forget overall height. Many parking garages stop at 6' 10" and if you have a Frankenlift (and 31" tires) with the Thule/Yakima supports and cross bars along with an OEM basket, you will not be able to enter parking garages.

I just swapped my OEM clamps and cross bars (from my Renegade Tupperware basket) for Yakima clamps and cross bars and have the BVG basket. I took off my MTR's/Rubi wheels for the stocks tires/wheels just before the swap. With the 2.5" lift, I am at 79" (6' 7"). I'll be at 6' 9" when I go back to the MTR's. (two inches due to the stiffer sidewall, 1" radius increase, and more air pressure - running at 38psi - stocks were at 30 psi when I measured).

That would give me 1" of clearance at the parking garages and they do have those bumps that will make the rear bounce up.

So....keep your overall height in mind if you make a basket deeper.

good point, thanks much! This parking garage problem has already occured with my CB antenna on the roof, and the "O, I think I will make it" because the garage was tall. and the result.... bing.....bing.....bing.bing.......

With the lift and a basket, even in the place of the stock rails, you can kiss the parking garages in San Jose good bye. I think I still fit in just one of them.

The BVG basket is not deep. The OEM basket is deep. Add the height and it is too tall with Yakima clamps, bars, lift, and 31" tires..

one option is to sink the basket down to where the bottom almost touches the roof. You would need clamps that hold onto the upper frame rails of the basket or devise another method, but that would allow a deeper basket.

Here is a design I am working on:

The forward portion of the roof rack is pointing to the lower right. The extended bar is to be a light bar guard.

What do you think?

My design is going back to 3 inches just due to the fact of trying to get into parking garages (and my own garage) If I keep going I will need to put a lift kit on my garage!
