Had something interesting happen to me today. I've got a CRD 4x4, with the OME 2.5" lift on it and 245/75R16 tires on it. It also has the Selec-Trak transfer case. Coming home from work today, it was a bit icy out in spots, so I decided I'd put it in Full-Time 4x4 mode just in case. When I got to my house, I decided to back into the driveway. As soon as I started backing up while turning the steering wheel hard right, I heard/felt a loud Bang coming (seemingly) from the front, probably driver's side. It almost felt like driveline bind, but I double-checked and it was in Full-time mode. No cracks in the dif housing that I can see, nothing leaking out of a CV joint, and a drive around the block afterward didn't give me anymore strange noises or odd pulling. All seems to be okay. Any idea what it was, or what else I should be inspecting? |

I have always heard that that was normal even though they say that you can drive on pavement just fine in full time I have always gone back to 2wd when I did not need it It was a bind in the T-case that just let go real hard not a problem |

Thanks for the replies. That's exactly what it felt like: either some gears just "unmeshed" because of the bind, or something similar. Normal though it may be, that kind of thing can't be good for the internals. Last time I heard something like that, I was driving my Unimog and one of the gears in the tranny had sheered off all the rivets and let go. Not a good memory for me... |
