Here's my story.

After a long day of traveling to and from dear camp and making it thru mud, rocks and rivers, my 04 was taken out on US41. Not by a deer, not by some fool drunk, nor by a vehicle eating pothole but a 200 Lb electic motor armature. I was traveling west on US41 doing 65 mph and out of the east lane came the armature. I hit the thing with the frount end and puntted the thing off the highway. Under my front end my cradle was caved in and the hole thing moved aft about 1.75". Stearing is AFU.
Well off to the shop. Mybe it's a good time for that SFA conversion.

P.S. This is my first post, but I'm not new. Been ready all the GREAT info on this site.

It's for us electric people. Electrician talk. Not sure why that would be on the highway. Must have fallen off a trash truck or planted there.

darn, that sucks. I thought about a new front axle but my liberty is repairable so I have to go with the insurance fix. I just ordered that battering ram of an ARB bumper to ensure that my front end won't be so easily damaged if anyone else pulls out in front of me.

Ya it came from a scrap truck from the oposite lane. I was traveling oneway and the armature was travelling the other. I wounder what the closing speed was when I hit the bugger. The thing was about 2.5 feet dia. with a total lgth of around 3 feet from shaft end to end. I'm darn glad I was in the Lib when I hit the thing. The car that was in the lane next to me was one of those new Honda echono nat cars, "Fit". If he had hit the same thing the car wouls have been crushed!!!

By the way, I did not ID the truck that it came from. Nor did anyone stop to claim the armature. :x Boy that would have been great, a truck pulls up, driver jumps out and the driver says, "That's were that thing went!

Think about the rotating part inside your starter - that is an armature. Looks something like this:

What he's talking about must have come out of a pretty big motor

The UP of MI? Can you say paper mills (and a few mines if I remember correctly)? I'm sure neither of those places would have over-sized parts

Maybe an old Copper Mine? // That must have been scary to hit something like that though... I'd have been cringing the entire time.

I have inlaws in Marquette and served at Calumet Air Force Station in the early 70's, KI was our support base . Love the area in the summer but you get way too much snow and way to cold. We did a lot of Geocahing in the UP this summer.

I do not know how much skids would help, but they are on order. Insureance is covering it. The dealership said they have all the parts but the LBJ's. I have not had the Recall done yet. Been on a waitting list and now on the top of that list. :P

KJFishman, Yes we do get alot of snow here. 300 inches Plus each winter. About 4 years ago topped 400 inches, around 422" If you want to see some recent photos of your old stompping grounds at Calumet AFS, go to
http://www.radomes.org/museum/ look at the top left of your screen, go to "What's New" and look for Calumet AFS MI. The place is up for sale. WHAT A VIEW love to buy the place.
