I live on the edge of town where new land is being prepared for houses. Since I bought my Jeep a couple of months ago, I have the urge to do some off-roadin on this undeveloped land. I've toyed around a couple of times now, and again this evening. As I was leaving the area a Toyota RAV4 pulled onto the newly paved road. I drove around the block to get some of the mud off my tires and noticed the RAV4 decided to have some fun too..... only he didn't have but 6 ft of fun! His back tires just barely made it off the paved road! I was playing in the mud for about 15 minutes with no close calls. I looped back around to help this unknown person, but I didn't have any straps or chains (neither did he). He hung his head low and said "Thanks anyways. We'll have to push it out." It feels so good to own a JEEP!

Here's a couple pics:

Look closely and you can see the headlights of the stuck RAV4!

Some people just don't learn. The Rav4 and the CRV are station wagons sitting higher off the ground. They are not off-road vehicles.

Also, look at the tires, that also could have played a major role in his getting stuck compared to you.

My ex-wife had a Rav4, and I decided to take it out on some REALLY SOFT SAND one day. There were a couiple of other rigs stuck out there, but I felt confident...it did really well! Not having low range hurt me going over a mig dune, but I just slapped it in reverse, and got a running start at it. I was actually pretty suprised at how well out 2002 Rav did.

That being said, I feel much more comfortable in the jeep.

I'd say the driver was more of the reason behind the "getting stuck" than the vehicle but none the less - it's always fun to play in the mud

I've only had my Jeep for 2 months, and I had a tow strap on my X-mas list. But didn't get one! :(

Shopping list:
1) Al's A-Arms
2) Tow strap
3) ....?

I use to wheel my wifes 01 escape, put a set of bfg's on it, wasn't really half bad. The lack of ground clearence was the biggest factor. I just had to learn it's limitations. You can wheel any 4-wheel drive vehicle and have fun if you know it's limitations. Like as been stated, it's more the driver than the vehicle. The jeep and my ranger is far more capable, but it was fun. The compass has no ground clearence, but the patriot should be a blast for light duty wheeling, but I bet there will be some compass'es that find there way to the trails, it's just bound to happen.

At least the escape has a low range.

I wish it would of had low range, but no dice. Low range is nice to have, but I don't really use it that much, it's good to have when you need it I guess.

I actually am looking forward to the patriot coming out, maybe folks will get more creative with Independent suspension lifts. Hopefully that drive system holds up though, Maybe it will be really easy to swap out some parts and make the low range even lower?

From what I understand, the low range is in the tranny, when I biult one on the site, the low range didn't come in the manual. So it must be an xtra low gear in the auto tranny or something, well I gues it would have to be, cause there's no t-case. They must only be able to with the automatic.

One of the reasons I didn't buy the Rav was the 4wd can not be locked-in. It automatically clutches the rear wheels into and out-of service as it senses front wheel spin, a system common with primary front wheel drive arrangements. It works OK but isn't what I wanted for the amount of hilly, snowy driving I encounter. I think the off-roaders are going to be dissappointed if Jeep uses the same arrangement on the Patriot.
