I have received 2 problem codes from a friend who is a vocational mechanic teacher showing our 2002 Liberty has a EVAP system leak detected (PO451) and Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Range/Performance (PO455). I realize the problem can be just about anything but does anyone know if this would prevent a vehicle from passing an State Emissions Test?

Thanks for any help in advance

Check the gas cap. It has been known to throw those types of codes when not properly screwed on.

Check your fuel lines too. I had to have all mine replaced when it was less than 3 years old. They looked like they were 10 years old.

We did try replacing the gas cap and that worked for a day before the light came back on. However, the car did pass the emission test yesterday so it must be a minor leak. I will have them check the fuel lines. Thanks for the help.

Liberty,
Search back within the last week or so. There was a decent size thread about the few main ways to fix this problem. Nothing too difficult that you couldn't do yourself.
later,
mike

Check the hoses on the canister by the gas tank. Well known problem. I had it on my 2002.

I've been an ASE Tech for 24 years, and the shop I work at is an E-Check approved repair facility.Up in the engine compartment you will find a test cap for pressurizing the e-vap system. It will be green in color. We use a special gas charged machine that will fill the system with a pressurized smoke.Someone up in your area will probably be able to do this for you at a reasonable cost.
Hope this helps.
