Post subject:  Reverse light wiring help...

Does anyone have a wire schematic for the reverse lights path or know where the feed comes from in the front?

I'm finally wiring up the Hella lights that are mounted to the back of my roof rack. I'm using a double throw switch.

1 side of the switch will be hooked to acc power so they will stay on when the switch is throw that way.
Center will be completely off.
2nd side will pass the reverse light current to the relay so that they will only come on when the reverse lights are on.

Instead of tapping into the reverse lights themselves at the back of the Jeep, and running a wire all the way to the front, I was hoping to get a reverse-only power source from somewhere under the dash.

Anyone know which wire controls them, or can think of some other source that is reverse-only?

why not just run to positive wires to the lights themselves... splice into stock back up lamps, and run one from your switch. Ligths get the power from whatever source is feeding it..

mostly because I want the ability to completely turn the off.

The way you describe, I can turn them on with a switch, or the reverse lights turn them on when active, but no way to keep them from lighting up if I got in reverse and don;t want them on.

Your way...
1)Always on
2)Reverse-only on.

My way...
1)Always On
2)Always Off
3)Reverse-Only on

Yea that is how I have mine is set up. Tomorrow I can pull mine out and check the wire color for you. Mind you that there have been lots of changes since your '02 vs. my '05. Your best bet will be to pull the tail lamp out. Use a multi meter and check which wire from there. The wire loom runs inside the cabin. Under the trim below the drivers door.

If you wouldn't mind, can you see what colors plug into the bulb harness at the back, and see if it's the same color that you tapped into in the front? and which wire bundle in the front?

The one that runs under the driver's side trim goes up to the the distro block right behind the hood release.

The crappy pdf service manual I have says there is a fuse for the back-up lights, but I can't find something marked as such.

I check it out for you. It will not be able to get to it until later tonight. I have to head out to Cumberland now. But will check when I get home.

My IPF backup light came with a crap-load of wiring mostly because you can run it automatically with the stock lights, completely turn it off or turn it on at any time. They all led to a three way switch that I mounted up front. The power wires are separate and go to a hot power source, I tapped into the cigarette lighter. The wires that tapped into the stock back up lights went to a relay that triggered the connection to the real power source and new backup light.

In my Jeep the reverse light is a white wire with a gray stripe.

Yes same color and I found it in this loom. I would still double check with a multi-meter. Just to be safe it hasn't changed.

bleh. my colors are different.

another question though...

The plug has 2 rows of pins. one row has 3 pins, the other row has 2 pins.

Which row and which pin goes to your reverse lights?
