My wife just went to the Stealership to have a CEL (Check Engine Light) checked out on her NEW (only 1300 miles05 Liberty).

The Stealership's Service Thief said it's probably due to the New Locking Gas Cap she just installed (yesterday). He told her to put the old (Unlocking) gas cap back on and drive it to see if the Code goes away (resets). He also stated that they have being seeing a rash of CELs lately due to the fact of folks rushing out and installing locking gas caps.

If it states on, he said to bring it back in and they will run a Scan on it and pull the Codes. Of course there will be a Service Charge for doing this. Real good Service for a New vehicle.  :x

Anyone else getting a CEL after installing a Locking Gas cap ??

That sounds odd to me. Are you (or she) clicking the cap a minimum of three times when putting it back on? Unless there's some issue with newer KJ's?

I've never had a issue with my oem locking cap. I forget who wrote it (here in another forum thread), but we '02 KJ Owner's really do look better in ours.

Is the new gas cap an aftermarket one? There was another post around here about the same thing happening. A couple of the auto parts stores are selling some cheap ones that mess with your emissions.

If you really want a locking cap you may try Mopar (if you didn't already).

Not sure. I'll have to check with her and see.

It is a new aftermarket cap.

How much are new Mopar locking gas caps ?? :?:

1st Jeep Parts

Double check, but I believe caps are universal.

Yes, the SHOULD BE, but apparently not all are created equal. Not sure on the price for the Mopar, but they are on national backorder...go figure.

My Jetta can throw codes if you don't lock the filler cap down 2 clicks past what would normally be closed. If the KJ uses a similar sytem requirement then I wouldn't be surprised if an aftermarket filler cap would do this.

I've been holding off on getting my own from Pep Boys or some such for just this reason.

Heh, lame first post. :?

I posted my experiance as a service advisor and locking gas caps in another post and said that at my dealership we have been having a rash of cel due to aftermarket gas caps. I was talk to my tech today about this after charging a lady 60.00 to tell her that her aftermarket stant locking gas cap was what was causing the problem. My tech seems to think that most of these gas caps are vented. Now the reason you get that light to come on whether or not the cap is tight is the vent. As stated in the previous posts the filler necks in the cars now aren't able to be syphoned as easily as older cars. Honestly if you have a new car whether its a KJ, ford, chevy whatever you don't really need the locking cap. Me personally I would much rather get a gas tank skid than a locking gas cap.

I also posted my experience on a locking gas cap, the $20 from Napa. Had it on a week and a half now with no problems, no lights, nothing. Just as happy as can be.

By 1990, the Clean Air Act amendments called for a new generation of OBD systems called OBD II.

OBD II systems test the fuel system by either pressurizing the system or applying a vacuum and measuring even slight changes which might indicate a leak and a possible loss of fuel vapors.

Gas caps are among the most critical components of the fuel system and if not correctly designed, calibrated and installed can cause the OBD II system to display a warning message to the motorist.

if you use a vented gas cap on the newer vehicles it is going to cause a problem. Be sure you get the right cap. If you go with a Stant Gas cap like in mnay auto stores. The correct part number for a v6 would be 10898 if you want the locking gas cap the part number is 10508.

Do not just pick a universal cap or you will have problems. Hope that helps.
