Hey fellas, quick question for y'all. I've got the itch to buy this 15" survival knife i found on AllThingsJeep.com, but i'm not sure that's entirely legal to carry around in the truck with me. Can anybody tell me for sure what the laws are concerning that type of thing?

it depends state to state. Google "legal knife length" and any state you will be in. This also does not include any local city/county laws that may be more restrictive.

haha, no, but i tend to think of myself as somewhat of a "survivalist." Yeah, in NJ, i know, hard to imagine, but I just think it might be a good thing to have around, could come in handy for taking out brush on a trail if need be, it even has a small saw built into the back of the blade, so i could probably use it for cutting small fire-wood if i needed to.

Savage, not sure about Jersey, in Delaware dont think there is a problem carrying them as long as their not concealed however if carried (pocket knife) cant be longer than your 4 fingers (width)from base to point. I have lots of friends huntin right now and there is usually not an issue with that. Best bet is to check locally with a NJSP barracks or the local PD....

Dont get caught doing something you arent supposed to do and it would never be a problem anyhow, right? :)
You know like stabbing someone

Honestly, Im suprised they havnt outlawed tire irons because of the fact they could be used as a weapon.

If you decide to carry it, put it in a bag, (or strap it to the side if it must be in the open) with first aid and other "survival" type items and it would be harder for the authorities to say you were carrying it around with the intent to us it as a "weapon".

In NJ, you'll probally have a problem, since pretty much everything is restricted/illegal. Here in NH, I don't even need a permit to walk around with a shotgun over my shoulder . I love my state. I need a permit to carry a CONCEALED handgun, but if I want to walk around with one in a leg holster in plain view, no problem.

I'd say that you should just check the local laws and statutes before you do anything like that. Besides a 15" blade is a wee bit excessive. I carry one of these for all my survival needs: http://www.ontarioknife.com/asek.html it does everything you could need it to, including have loops for lashing to a lever (make a spear). Glass breaker on the butt, saw on the back, combo edge, lanyard hole, and hammer surfaces on either side of the glass breaker/scorer. The little tool that it comes with fits into a slot in the sheath, and has a webbing/cord cutter, flathead driver, and a blade sharpener on the back ridge. It all fits together in the nylon sheath that it comes with. Best part is that it's 50 state legal because it isn't 15" long  .

Yeah, that's definitely not allowed in MA. I think the limit is something crazy-short like 4" or something.

Sounds like what you need to carry in your trunk is a chain saw........it's legal everywhere and if you can get it started fast enough no one will mess with you until it runs out of gas.....

Rules for New Jersey:

Summary: General folders OK. Single-edged fixed blades may be.
Max length: Under 18 may not possess knife with 5" or longer blade, or 10" or longer overall. No other apparent limitation.
Specifically illegal: gravity knife, switchblade knife, dagger, dirk, stiletto, or ballistic knife "without any explainable lawful purpose" (i.e. an ill-defined exemption). Manufacturers and sellers are not exempt.
Relevant laws: 2C:39-3.e 2C:39-9.d 2C:39-9.1 (Statutes, search for "knife" or "knives")

I found it here:

http://www.donath.org/Rants/StateKnifeLaws/

It's amazing to me. I can carry concealed in 29 states. The places I'm not allowed to carry tend to have the most dangerous, violent cities. Who actually thinks the threat of a misdemeanor will stop someone getting ready to comit a felony? In my opinion, too strict of rules on weapons keep them out of the hands of law abiding citizens, and enable criminals to have a level of confidence that their prey won't be able to fight back.

Well, thanks for all your help fellas, looks like i'll be ordering that knife tonight then. But i'll probably just leave it in the house unless i know i'll be out on the trails. Just to avoid any unnecessary confrontations.

For Kentucky, according to KRS 500.080 any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife is considered a deadly weapon. You're not allowed to cary concealed deadly weapons without a permit. This means you couldn't leave it in the side pocket of your door, but you could have it sitting on the passenger seat. I wouldn't recommend that though. Keep it in the back and you should be fine.

I would advise to plan on mounting it in the trunk and should your vehicle get searched, you can chalk it up to a trail tool....

Other than that, I keep a fold-up shovel in my trunk with a serrated edge...

I've been carrying the Tracker knife in my Jeep for years. It's not just a knife, it's a hardware store. I figure if I am ever stopped by the police and they search my vehicle for any reason, I'll just be honest and tell them. I have nothing to hide and it is great when camping. Kind of expensive but I'll never need another knife. Special forces swear by them...

They also make a smaller model called the T2 that should pass the laws in NJ.

I think if you have any other officer other than someone trying to make a name for himself you should be fine, most officer's I know here in Oklahoma are outdoors type so they understand the need for something bigger when hunting, camping, fishing, wheeling, etc... just keep it in the rear with the rest of your gear.

I remember driving to Texas some years back and I took my .25 with me cause i knew i would be staying in a motel in Dallas, The tow dolley chains fell off and were dragging on the hwy and I got pulled over by Texas Highway Patrol. they saw the .25 sitting on the dash and asked to see it, stated that the brand was a good brand but suggests something with a lil more knock down power like a 9mm or .45 as he handed it back. But then again it was Texas...
