Hey y'all... I need some help. I want to change the rear diff fluid in my KJ and was wondering where the "fill" hole is? I did some searching just lying underneath but am not sure if I found it or not. I felt a small bolt head right on top of the diff beside an electrical cord/connector. I couldn't get see so I'm not sure what it is. Anyways, where is the fill hole? Also, what kind of oil do they recommend? Anyone tried synthetic? What comes from factory? There should be a rubber plug on the diff cover. Pop that out and that is where you fill it back up. |

there is a circular thing middle of Diff, it is rubber, yank it out and there you go. It is best though to unbolt the cover, and clean out the magnet and the diff and get the excess rtv off. And you should get some RTV to or a gasket and then replace the cover |

Hey slikjr,to answer the question on the fill hole,it's on the cover.There will be a rubber plug about midway up.You probably need to check your manual on a specific weight of fliud.As far as brands,everyone on here seems to love the "Amsoil"brand.I think a fellow member of the board "JJsKJ" sells this product and can help with all of your lubrication needs.Good luck.

Theres is a rubber plug on the back of the Diff.. Pull it out..

EXCELLENT! Thanks for all the help everyone. Yeah, I know the plug you are all talking about. And I'll pick up some Amsoil I think. Do you fill it up just to that hole then? It's half way up, so you fill it to there or...? |

PLMK if you need any help with that.
When you refill it the level will be about an index fingers first knuckle length below that hole. Stick your finger in, bend it down at the first knuckle and the tip of your finger should touch the gear lube or close to it. My Jeeps work out that way w/ the factory cover and filling on a level surface. W/out factory posi they take a little over 2 qts and with posi take 2 qts. + the additive which I dump in after the first Qt. My wifes KJ w/ Powertrax takes 2 qts. |

Isn't it supposed to be 75W140? Full synthetic like what came from the factory? I used a bottle pump and it flowed fine. |

I did 5 years in Anchorage when I was a kid. Don't know how I survived it as I get cold now when it hits 50 degrees.  I figure I can get away w/ busting chops on the whole dog sled/igloo thing as I heard alot of that after moving to NJ from AK.

Yea. It was a real treat to fly into Anch from Perryville or Chignic Lake. I was in there once for a year straight. I was the last one left who hadn't gotten out at least once. There was this little old lady and me, and then she died and got out so that left me. I wasn't complaining. |

j/k yeah it was cold, I tried to get it as warm as I could, it was so thick it blew the seals out of my transfer pumps
