Just wondering what maintenance should be done on the automatic transmission. I'm over 50k, should I just monitor the fluid level or go for a full drain and fluid swap?

thanks

Definately time for a full drain, filter change and fresh fluid.

I had the sumb*tch drained at 65K and the fluid was still nice and light-red.

Mine looks purrdy after 30K miles too... I changed it around 20K but I'm up to 56,xxx now and it still looks brand new.

If it's your first time changing it, I'd do the filters and the pan change. You might not need to exchange 100% of the fluid if it still looks and smells normal.

How do you change the filters on one of the 45rfe's? I know that there is a normal tranny filter in it but there is also a "can" filter that supposedly requires a special Mopar wrench. Do we really need the "special" Mopar wrench?

no, it looks like a small oil filter...looks like something you would see on a 20 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. i was able to break it loose with my hands.
