Post subject:  AC compressor clutch...

Hi All,

Is it normal for the AC compressor to engage and disengage every 15 secs or so while the Jeep is idleing?

I'm having a problem where turning the AC on on a hot day causes the engine temp to continue to rise until it hits the H (only let it go that far once :-/) within 5 minutes or so. Turn the air off and it drops back down to normal in about 10 mins.

Any thoughts if these are related?

Thanks in advance,

DonC

They are not related I don't think.

The compressor cycling like that is because its low on freon....
The engine heating up I would think is the fan not kicking on (if its a electric fan) or the fan clutch being bad ( if it engine mounted)

It's normal for the AC to cycle on and off. Mine never reaches more than the 1/2 way point on the gauge even on the hottest day at idle. Sounds like something else is the problem, fan maybe.

Had my uncle take a look at it and looks like the AC compressor is going. It rattles when it cycles on. Might not be the whole problem, but certainly doesn't help :-( Any thoughts on the best place to get a new one?

Thanks,

DonC

well, ive not heard of to many compressors going back on here, so thats is a first for me. As for the heating up, tell us more. does it do it at idle only, or does it heat up going down the hw also. Usually if it only heats up at idle, its a problem with the fan or t-stat. If it heats up at idle and on the hw, then it could be the radiator, water pump, and the t-stat, probably not all at the same time though.

It does not overheat at idle, even with the air on, only when driving with the air on. With the air off, the temp never goes over the half way point. I changed the belt in case it was slipping, but didn't change anything. The fan does come on as soon as the engine gets hot.

The AC compressor sounds like it has marbles tumbleing around in it :?
